Good for you. Maybe we'd care if this were the Zen thread.

All of this elitist douchebaggery makes me hate Apple.

Well, the PMCs and the iPod are two totally different things at this point. You get an iPod because you first want a portable music player and a few extra options next. You get a PMC because you want to carry around your video files, and extra options next. I mean, I would hope that nobody would ever pick up a PMC because and first and foremost they want a portable music player. Because, those things may be "portable" when it comes to video, they aren't when it comes to music, at least, if you ask me. A portable music player slips into your back pocket, jacket pocket, or whatnot.

And while I'd like to see an iPod one day that has video playback, I understand where Apple is coming from. Music is something you can play while you're doing one of countless other tasks. A portable video player only really has use when you have no other task to be a part of. Because of that, they are still more of a niche product.

I really don't get why pictures on an Ipod are big.
It's not big. The iPod is still first and foremost a music player. The photo ability is just a nice extra option, just like the address book, the calendar, the notes feature, things like that.

I like the idea, though, of being able to take all of my photos around with me. If somebody ever asks to see something, I can show them. Not a big deal, but a nice thing, and could be really useful sometimes.

The rumors have always been that while we might not see video played ON the iPod, we might see the ability to play video via a TV from the iPod, like we can now do with photos. Again, not a big deal, but it would be another nice extra. Want to take a movie or TV show over to watch at a friend's place? Play it from the iPod, without having to carry extra things, or worry about if they have a VCR / DVD player / PC needed to play the video.

Who is being elitist? Some of us just like the iPod, and think it works better than the other players. Just like some people on here like the Xbox, and think it is better than other systems.

  4. I wonder if anyone will try some crazy homebrew stuff to utilize this new color screen getup. I have faith someone, somewhere knows how to tinker with Apple's products. On the other hand, I'm really excited this is out - I kinda had a feeling it would happen, but my 15gig ipod is enough for me, and I don't take nearly enough photos to justify it.

Now...if they used that color screen to playback movies...or play games...that would be cool. In the end though, it's all gravy to the iPod's true meat - the music playback.

  5. I can't believe no one else has brought this up. Ipod circular wheel control, button in the middle, color screen. You've essentially got a portable atari control. Atari emulation possibly more. Or hell a dvr playback device if someone unlocked that sucker and got the software on.

    Bulshit, check this: http://www.engadget.com/entry/6213210442242855/

Personal MP3/Videoplayer with 20gig HD and is roughly same size as an Ipod mini, plays games too.

  7. PDAs have been doing this for years.

Why anyone would spend $100 more for an iPod is beyond me.
Precisely. The Zen got good reviews, so it would be an ok choice too. I see people in the bus, at school, downtown with iPods all the time. It's a good product but alot of the people that own them don't realize that they'll have to send the battery back to Apple when it dies, and unlike the Zen, it doesn't come included with a plethora of goodies.

The iPod photo is nice, but if you're not a photographer, or have much of a need for photos on the go, this is useless.

Well, size of regular ipod, not mini. If it was mini size that'd be quite impressive.

Because the Zen looks like shit and is cheaply built, maybe.
