Thread: Prison Movies

  1. Prison Movies

An interesting little sub genre that I find interesting. What I like about these movies, at least the good ones, is that they usually revolve around the triumph of the human spirit, about how you can break a person, that sort of thing. Of course the king of this genre is The Shawshank Redemption, nothing else even comes close. One that I don't recall anyone ever talking about was The Last Castle which was pretty good. Green Mile was alright but I wasn't too crazy for it. And escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood is another good one.

So list some of your favorites, and please, no lame jokes about pornos and or anal rape.

  2. Shawshank is a great movie ... but isn't it just a rip off of every other movie in this genre? (Evil Warden, etc)

It was also filmed in the old prison located in my city (Mansfield, Oh).

Cool Hand Luke is still my fav. It's one of the few B&W movies I will still watch everytime it comes on.

Shawshank Redemption isn't original (actually, a lot of prison movies are really derivative), but it's easily the best crafted and executed. I'd like to see another movie that so blantanty goes for the emotions and pulls it off 100%.

Has anyone seen Papilion? I'd like to check that one out.

  4. How about Van Damme's Death Warrant

    Or Stallone's Lock Up. !!!

Van Damme's 'In Hell', was it?

    That was a good one.

  6. Yep, Another one. This time Van Damme visits Russian prison hell-hole.

  7. Papillon is definitely one of my favorites, check it out if you haven't seen it. Actually my favorite Steve McQueen movie.

Isn't the orginal "the count of Monte Criscoe" like the orginal prison movie?

I don't know how good the remake was, but I really dug the old as dirt orginal cut of that movie.

  9. I like those pornos that take place in prison.

  10. Down by Law is certainly worth mentioning.
