It's $10. You can't afford to make a $10 mistake?

Unreal 1 and 2 were both great graphical showpieces but mediocre games. I couldn't bring myself to finish either of them. Don't buy anything from this series unless it has the word "Tournament" in it.
I guess I could, but why would I when I can avoid making the mistake for free?Originally Posted by Dolemite
It's not just about the money, either. It's about wether or not I think it will be worth the hassle of going to the mall, buying the game, installing the game, installing any useful updates, configuring all the settings, playing the game once and then uninstalling it because it sucks.
I think PC FPS are generally pretty fun, and its kind of a hard formula to screw up - make a game that plays like Quake, but make it prettier. That's why I'll probably get it if I happen to be in that mall again and it's still there. I won't just rush out and grab it, though, because I've been told that it's average at best.
Unreal was a technical marvel and was impressive for coming so close to Quake II at a time when it seemed unthinkable that anyone could keep up with id. But it really wasn't a great game at all. I've tried to play through it many times and I always get bored before long. It lacks that addictive quality that Quake has, and it's much slower paced. I think in some ways it kinda aiming for the formula that Half Life nailed later that year, but it missed the mark.
The best scene was the third level I think, when you're in the long hallway, and the lights go out two by two, until it's nothing but darkness.
Then "OMFG A SKARRJ IS TRYING TO KILL YOU".
Classic.

This scene was awesome, especially at the time.Originally Posted by Roufuss
Another great moment for me at least was actually in the first stage. After the prison you see a way out and when you finally go outside you see the amazing looking clouds with those bird things flying. I was totally in awe when I first saw the outdoor visuals. Now bear in mind this was when bought my first pc which was powered by the awesome Voodoo Banshee. It was one of my first pc games and was totally blown away at the time.
The best stuff in Unreal 1 comes later, and like I said, it's a looooooong game. REALLY long. It's basically a massive chunk of levels they'd been working on and threw together. The expansion had even more levels that didn't make it the first time. Not that some of the vistas will have *quite* the impact now...

I remember that feeling while playing that. It's a whole lot different going through it now thoughOriginally Posted by raystorm
