I was going to bring that up with real actors, but I figured why bother. Jeremy probably thinks they are.
They work out to look good so they can get the role instead of someone else in t he movie!

  3. Eh, forget it, I knew it would come to this, as I said when sleeve initially brought it up. I wasn't referring to bitchfighting, I was referring to guys trying to claw their way up to the main roster, trying to actually make a living at the craft. Playing a role doesn't automatically make someone an athlete, but there are obviously exepctions to this rule. As for them being "competitive" athletes, that's a grey area, as they aren't competing for a role that athletic prowess (ideally) would determine, but since this one role likely wouldn't be their main source of income, I'd say no.

    n.

A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.

And this is why real wrestlers are athletes, and WWE or whatever wrestlers are not. It's not competitive when you're simply acting out a script. Though I suppose it's up for debate on whether or not that "especially..." part is necessary, but I believe it's an integral part of being an athlete.
You bolded the wrong part. As it says in your own definiteion, it's a person "possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance...." It doesn't say a person has to be involved in sports, it just means they have to have the ability to be. A wrestler generally possesses all of those things, so does a guy who works out a lot and takes care of him self. That makes them both athletes.

  5. Wrestling is as much a sport as being a stuntman in a movie. Fellow stuntmen are competing for a role in the next big movie, and they work out and are athetlic--thus, they are a part of a sport.

I think that's pretty irrefutable right there.

A person who is in shape doesn't, usually, have the skills necessary for performing any sports of a competitive nature, which is what makes an athlete IMO. The only argument I can think of is that "professional" wrestlers possess the skills necessary to wrestle for real.

No it's a logic hole on your behalf. Just because a bunch of them are competitive athletes doesn't make all of them competitive athletes, and it certainly doesn't make wrestling fit the criteria for being an competitive athlete.

They're athletes for sure, but not competitive.

You take wrestling WAY too seriously.

  8. "Athlete" and "athletic" are relative terms. For example, a person can play a sport in a country where they are not good in that sport and be an athlete, and then come to the US and suddenly be not an athlete anymore. There's no way to define it other than by what the majority thinks, but since the majority differs from area to area, so does the standard.

PS. Fuck my description. if you're not playing a competitive sport, you're not an athlete.

  10. Astro, by and large, they're ALL competitive athletes, as all but a few have security in their gigs. Also, it's great to know that wrestling isn't a competitive athlete. Rich, I'm glad the world isn't bound to your rules of athletics.
