I'm dropping a background program or two to see if that alleviates the server load to any signifcant degree.

what background programs are you dropping exactly, cause a lot of them need to be running to make the server work okay...
hint: urchin takes an obscene amount of processor/memory
There's no way I'm going in there and pulling plugs haphazardly. Give me some credit.
I actually had another program in mind. This should work out fine.
