ECM-era GameFan had a few things really going for it. The staff was pretty small, so you knew exactly who everyboy was, which is a very important factor. There's no way in the hell I can begin to keep track of all of the staff for HGM, let alone start to get an idea of who they all are. With GameFan, you knew what kind of person ECM was, Dango was, Kodomo was, or even I was, so you knew how your opinions on games or whatnot stood according to them. I know nothing about pretty much all of the HGM staff, and from what I've read, their personality hardly shows through.Originally Posted by Changeling
The other big factor was, at that point, the atmosphere of GameFan seemed to be one of "say your true feelings, and not worry about the backlash." Look at the trashing of Final Fantasy VIII, or Shenmue. I didn't work in the actual office, so I could be wrong, but it felt like the writers themselves were more in control, which meant that they could say what thay wanted, and had more of a push for what got covered. When the people writing the coverage gets more say in what gets covered, you get more reviews and whatnot that are heartfelt and meaningful. For example, with AnimeFan, I had NOBODY telling me what I could or couldn't do - I decided what to cover and exactly what to say about it. Because of that, I think my section was far stronger than it would have been otherwise.
