Here's the thing, though - they could just put some official art on the cover, and be done with it. If it is a case of him not having the time to do it, or not wanting to put out an effort due to not being paid (totally understandable), then scrap the "custom covers" idea and do what everybody else does. An unoriginal cover is better than a cover that makes your mag look bushleague.

For the cover, I think DOA girls are a little out of the range of the artist's style, which is why it looks terribly forced, and probably done under major time restraints, which is why the foot doesn't even look like it's connecting with the girl she's stepping on. I'm sure they can't just drop the cover even if they wanted to since it would alienate the artist, and risk alienating the readership they do have.

Personally, if I was insane enough to take on making a VG mag, I'd go with official art (since custom art really doesn't stand out very much on the shelf anyway) and do something that grabs attention with the fonts and overall style of the cover. The mags are so similar in content anyway, something would have to bleed style to grab my interest.

You may not realize this, but if someone is displaying their work in a public forum in an attempt to get someone to pay for it, they leave themselves open for criticism from said public. Just the way it goes, son.

You can't use the mascot of Publication A in Publication B (which is staffed by a bunch of people from Pub A), and then act all surprised when comparisons are drawn. Actions speak louder than words, and "we're not trying to be Gamefan" is drowned out by having Monitaur on the fucking cover.

HCG is more like Gamefan than Gamefan was. I almost died laughing the first time Jeremy denied it. Now its not even funny anymore.

Good point. Wolfinger has done good artwork in the past, but if he either doesn't have the time, just doesn't care, or has just plain run out of talent, then the mag would be better served by just using a different artist/official art.

While there's something to understanding the effort that goes behind it... if a painting, drawing, piece of visual art fails to please the eye, then it fails. Especially something like the cover of a videogame mag which is meant to have a mass appeal.

Wolf's covers were awesome in the GF days and the art style in the HGM's is very similar. It's still quality work given the fact that he's not being paid a dime. But you guys sit here and talk about his work like it's total shit, which it is not.

Seriously, I think Wolfie is a great guy, and a talented artist, but that cover is just terrible. It makes the mag look horribly amateurish.

You don't need to be able to do something better in order to criticize. If so, why would reviews/critiques for ANYTHING exist. When you play a game and dislike it, do you question yourself and say "I better not insult this game, oh no, because I can't do any better!" Give me a fucking break.
