Thread: Personal Killer Apps.

  1. N64: Mario 64. I think this is pretty self-explanatory.

PS2: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. I didn't get a PS2 until this game came out. I like arcade racers, and this is a good one. Of course the PS2 already had a ton of other great games, but this is the one that made me actually buy the system.

GameCube: Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. It was Star Wars, and it looked pretty. What can I say?

XBOX: Panzer Dragoon Orta. I like the genre. Also, it was Panzer Dragoon and it looked pretty.

GBA: Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. Castlevania is my favorite series of all time. I'll probably buy a DS just to play the new AOS.

NeoGeo Pocket Color: SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Mellenium. I bought the system just to play the game. It was worth it.

All the other systems I've owned I bought more for their libraries and not just a single game.

I agree. I didn't buy the system of this game, but I enjoyed it. I also liked it better than Lament of Innocence. I only played the Legace of Darkness version though.

  2. sorry I'm not taking the time to add details or reminisces.
just bare bones for statistical puposes

Genesis: Altered Beast, Phantasy Star II

Powerbase Converter: Phantasy Star I, Wonderboy 3

    TurboGrafx: Dungeon Explorer + multitap
(ok, I never bought a Turbo, but Dungeon Explorer was the reason I'd exchange my Genesis with a kid up the street)

SegaCD: the promise of bigger & better everything (Sonic CD)

Saturn: Daytona USA, but I couldn't afford one at the time, so eventually it was Shining the Holy Ark, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Guardian Heroes, Daytona CCE, + Thunder Force V that eventually had me lay down hundreds.

    N64: Mario64, duh

Dreamcast: Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh - I had a mod chip and the game ordered even before I had the system. The promise of Phantasy Star & Daytona Online had a lot to do with the purchase too. Unfortunately both of those titles are responsible for the most disapointment I've ever suffered.

    PSX: ZanacXZanac

Gamecube: I don't know... why did I buy that thing? (with a broken mod switch from Burgandy, btw - which he never did make amends for)

    GBASP: Metroid Zero Mission

    PS2 : R-Type Final

X-box: Panzer Dragoon Orta - cool game, but ultimately a disapointment

Nintendo DS: Mario64DS, ..geeze what a waste of time and money, Mario 64 plays better on the N64, thank you very much.

  3. Nintendo: Legend of Zelda (at least that's what my parents bought it for)

    SNES: Brawl Brothers

Genesis: Altered Beast (I remember seeing this in Sharper Image and knowing I HAD to own it)

TurboGraphix 16: I completely forgot about this system, and Splatter House was my main reason for owning this. Then I realized I loved Keith Courage and Bonk far better...

    Saturn: Panzer Dragoon Zwei

Playstation: Jumping Flash/Xtreme Games edit: and also Warhawk

Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure/Trickstyle, I really had a thing for hoverboard games that you can do flips and tricks in, and well, still do...

    N64: Mario 64/Pilotwings

PS2: The Sony name, considering their were no killer apps at launch I didn't own a game for the system for quite a few months, it was simply a DVD player for me

GCN: Wave Race/Super Monkey Ball/Rouge Squadron (which I now abhor)

Xbox: Jet Set Radio Future and Halo

    I keep on forgetting systems...

Virtual Boy: Verticle Force/Red Alarm, this was when I was in my shooter phase, and at the time I thought they were both amazing shooters, I guess I had a lot to learn!

Game Gear: Shinobi 2, it is the be all end all GG game for me

Game Boy: I remember getting it when it first came out for the holidays, and man did Super Mario Land own me...

    Eat a bag of dicks.

  4. Atari 2600: No idea, it someone got into my house so I played it.

NES: No idea how this came about either, probably got it because of the craze. Got the Mario/Duckhunt combo.

Genesis: My friend down the road got one and we would play it all the time. When Sonic came out, that was the final straw. I had to get it.

Gameboy: One of the rich kids at my elementry school got the GB day one. Portable Nintendo gaming? Holy shit. Took awhile, but I got one for Christmas a year later.

Game Gear: Looked like it shit all over Gameboy. Big ass screen and color?

Sega CD: Sewer Shark. And then all the Sega promises of what the Sega CD could do.

    Nintendo 64: Easy. Mario 64.

    PS2: GTA III

Dreamcast: Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure. I was sick of having a N64 and only finding something good to play ever 4 months. And N64 games looked like ass seeing the DC was like the second coming.

GC: I really don't remember. I think I've sold all of the launch/first year games I've owned for it. Safe to say I got it for the Nintendo staples.

I haven't bought too many consoles because of any particular killer apps. Most of them I bought because I love playing videogames and always assumed that there would would be plenty of fun games to play. A few exceptions:

PS1 - Tekken (and Toshinden) -- I saw it, couldn't believe it, and immediately imported a PS1 at a ridiculous price. Thanks, Die Hard.

Neo Geo AES - King of Fighters ('94 I guess) -- same thing.

    N64 - Mario 64.
    "Fiends! Animals! Bastards!"

  7. ~ NES: Mario
    - self-explanatory

    ~SNES: Street Fighter 2
    - I had a choice between the SNES and Genesis. The sound of the Genesis version of SFII turned me off of the system for years, despite being a huge fan of it years prior.

    ~ Genesis: Sonic
    - The sprites looked so fucking huge at the time. I hummed the opening stage's tune for weeks after I played it for the first time.

    ~ TG:16: Bonk's Adventure and Street Fighter 2
    - I have a thing for underdogs. The fact that the TG:16 could pull off visuals similar to bigger boys (or, in the case of SFII, do them better), endeared the system to me more.

~ 3DO: Super Street Fighter II: Turbo
    - Okay, so I had a Street Fighter problem.

    ~ Playstation: Bioforge
    - Bioforge wasn't a Playstation game; it actually appeared on the PC. The graphics, however, resembled a Playstation game.

At the time, most of my friends were trying to decide whether they'd buy a Playstation or an N64. While I liked most of the games for the Playstation, the biggest knock against it was how it handled textures (would it be obsolete in a few months?). I finished Bioforge and figured, 'hey, I can tolerate these graphics. I might as well buy a system that looks decent and has games I actually like.'

    ~ N64: Goldeneye
    - self-explanatory; even if you hated the system, you couldn't hate on the game.

    ~ Dreamcast: Jet Grind Radio
    - The music, the humour, the graphics: it was as though someone had made a game specifically for me.

~ PS2: Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Castlevania: LoI
    - I idiotically figured that 2-D fighters would never come to the Xbox. Interestingly enough, I grew to hate CvS 2.

    - Castlevania: I go where that series goes (except for the N64).

~ Xbox: Jet Set Radio Future; Halo
    - I was a huge fan of JGR. I figured there'd be no way they'd screw this one up...

    - I had a 486DX2 66mhz up until 2 years ago, so I never had a chance to play FPSs (or post on GameGo, for that matter; I'd lurk at school). After Xbox launch, I played Halo on the kiosk at work. I instantly fell in love.

    ~ Gamecube: ???
    - I got it for free. I sold it this summer. Most difficult system to sell ever.

  8. Import Killer Aps

There were four instances where I got a boot disc or modded a system just to play imports.

PSX - Fire Prowrestling G. I was a huge wrestling fan years ago, so when I read about a wrestling game that had wrestlers from different worldwide organizations (including WWF, WCW, and ECW) and a great battle system, I had to get it. Got some device that hooks up at the back of the Playstation and a special spring that fooled the Playstation to think the lid was closed to perform the swap trick. Got good use out my DexDrive to download a FPG save that had all the wrestlers' fake names converted to their real ones.

Dreamcast - I bought the Gameshark Cheats Volume 1 CD so that I could use it as a boot disk to play Ikaruga.

Saturn - I bought the system well after it was dead along with the 4-in-1 catridge to play Capcom Generations Volume 2 (Ghouls n' Ghosts collection) and Parodius Deluxe Pack.

Gamecube - I initially bought a Freeloader to play Mr. Driller: Drill Land, but when I learned that the game wouldn't save onto my memory card via a Freeloader, I went out of my way to get my Gamecube modded. Well worth the expense.
    R.I.P. Paragon Studios

  9. I'm not counting the NES, SNES, 2600 or Coleco because I didn't buy 'em, my mom did. As for the PS2, well I didn't have to have it right away but a situation presented itself where I could get it, a multi tap, mem card, 3 extra pads, and a dozen launch games for next to nothing (under $40) so I jumped on it.

Genesis - Sonic. Played it at my buddy's place and I fell in love with the little blue dude. Saved up for a couple of months and I had the first system I ever bought for myself.

Saturn - Virtua Fighter Remix & Virtua Cop. Played Remix at a local used game shop and saw that VC was pretty close to the arcade version so I had to have the system.

N64 - WCW/NWO Revenge. Played it at a buddy's place for a few weeks with a dozen or so guys and decided I had to have my own copy & system so I could practice and whoop all their asses.

Playstation - Suikoden & Vandal Hearts. Watched my buddy play it on his system for a while and when he decided to get rid of his 1001 model and buy a new system I bought those two games and the system off of him on the cheep.

Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure & Soul Calibur. I'd been playing the imports at the game shop I worked at for months and I was really hyped for those two games.

Xbox - Halo. Once the S controller was released and I got to play some multiplayer I had to get my own.

Gamecube - Resident Evil. Picked it up just to play RE but I ended up keeping it for a little while just to sell it off once I played everything good on the system.
Currently Playing: Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster (PC), Let's Build a Zoo (PC) & Despot's Game (PC)

  10. PS2: Gran Tourismo 3 looked great and everyone was talking about how fun it was. I picked up the GT3 bundle. I was looking forward to Final Fantasy X as well.

Gamecube: All the hype about Rogue Squadron II and the great behind the scenes interview with Factor 5 (In Next Gen. magazine), was all I needed to know about the little GC.

Xbox: I enjoyed Halo on the PC and with titles like Fable, Halo 2 and SW: Battle Front coming out, I decided it was time to buy one.

Dreamcast: NFL2K looked sweet and with hopes of playing NFL online(Next year), this was a no brainer. Ready to Rumble was pretty cool as well as Air Force Delta.

Saturn: I loved Daytona in the arcades and was tired of 16-bit gaming. Saw a Saturn in Toys R US for $400 and ran to the bank. Virtua Fighter was a nice inclusion.

PSX/Playstation: Like NeoZ, WarHawk was one of the games that caught my eye. Destruction Derby looked sweet as well.

N64: Mario 64 and SW:Shadows of the Empire.

Genesis: My friend introduced my to Phantasy Star II. I talked him into Herzog Zwei. I bought his system when he was tired of playing it. Sega fan from then on.

    SNES: Super Mario and Zelda:ALTTP
