This is the problem. An education ought to be about teaching students how to think, or how to interact with information, especially differing points of view. It should also be about turning ordinary people into productive (not just in the economic sense of the term) citizens. Which is to say, education should be about prepping us for the varied experiences we will encounter in this life and it should also be about readying us for public life.

It shouldn't have anything to do with getting a job.

Most people go to college so that they have a better chance of getting a good non-service job. As Meach said, the role of college isn't job training, but some have employment centers to help graduating students find a job. That way, colleges can boast in their brochures that 90-something% of their graduates find employment.

well, if you have a crappy design it doesn't matter how much flash is on the site. personally i'd rather have something that's nice to look at and creative than just full of flashy pointless flash.

    Thanks, man.
I think it depends on the school. Up here, depending on the subject, University cultivates the mind, and college teaches you how to apply that in the work force.

  6. If you want an education that'll get you a job, just go for some kind of trade certification.
Electricians, welders, crane operators, etc. make serious money after less than a year of school and maybe a year or two apprenticeship.
There are also great opportunities in things like nuclear medicine that only require 3-4 semesters of focused courses to get a diploma.

The idea that you should go to university and learn everything you need to know about the world in four or five years is simply ridiculous.
You're better off getting a real, career-focused education, and then taking some nightschool/distance education courses every now and then for the rest of your life.
You'll be a much more 'well-rounded' person that way.

Know people that know people. All my jobs I got because I had friends that recommended me to other people, who in turn recommended me to other people. It's pretty much the only way to get any of the good jobs in this country in any business.

  8. Another thing: schools don't teach creativity. And that sucks. I can make just about anything with HTML/CSS, but the hard part is coming up with the idea.
