Thread: Thief

  1. Thief

I finally, finally, finally completed Thief. I've had it for the past five years, and every time, I quit during Assassins. I also sucked at it, so maybe that's why.

Pity that I didn't know how much better the game gets after Assassins. Not that it has a slow start, though.

I loved it. Sure, the geometry could've been done on the Quake 1 engine, but the environments still looked great, especially Constantine's areas. The stealth in Thief is done better than in any other game I've played. You need to be slick but not perfect to sneak by, and if you do get caught, you have to work to make things quiet again. Assuming you survive the guards, that is, as anything more than a one-on-one encounter is risky. The general floaty feel of the movement is great, too.

And then there's the audio, which is perfect. The conversations to listen in on, the combat sounds, the music (what's there)... All excellent. And then there's the ambient sound, which can be downright creepy.

And that's another thing. I've always been told how scary System Shock 2 is, but this game was even worse. It's mostly the sound, but Return to the Cathedral is simply fucked up.

Time to go through Thief II, I guess. I've heard that it's a better game overall, and this is easily one of the best singleplayer games I've played. Is Thief Gold worth looking into?

Thief II's a great game but don't expect it to be much different or vastly improved over the first game. It's more of the same. I never did beat it though as I lost my saves and never went back.

  3. Coincidentally enough, I recently returned from EB Games with a $5 copy of Thief 2 and I have two questions pertaining to the Thief series:

    1) What are the differences between Thief and Thief Gold?

    2) Would it be a good idea to play through Thief before starting Thief 2? If it makes any difference, I already have a sizable backlog of single-player PC titles that can keep me busy until I snag a copy of the first game.

  4. I have the newest edition to the series. I need to finish it though.
Dont be a robot, be human.

I think I peed my pants while playing that mission.

    Also, weeman-

Thief Gold has some extra added missions, fixed bugs, etc. I'd say go with Thief Gold when given the option between the two.
It would probably be in your best interest to play the first one before the second. I guess it could be a standalone, but you'd be confused, especially at the end. Thief is better than Thief 2 anyway.

I couldn't get into Deadly Shadows. No idea why, either. I can't help but think about how bored I am while playing it.

  7. Thief Gold is 2nd on my all time best list. One of the few games that really did immerse me. The sneaking. The trinket thieving. The bonking and dragging. I was Garrett. And I loved every minute.

Thief Gold is better than Thief: The Dark Project just for the Alice in Wonderland-inspired level. Think little/big.

  8. I heard that there are some really amazing fanmade maps.

  9. I think stylistically, my favorite map would have to be The Lost City. Although the whole game is just so damn cool it's insane. If you liked this one, then you'll love Thief II, it's more of everything and less of nothing.

Most of which can be found here.
    Time for a change

  10. What's the latest Thief on the XBox like? I've been seeing mixed reactions about it.
