Thread: California lawmaker revives antigame bill

  1. I thought the movie ratings where by law...
    Hm..
Either way, I really don't care if minors can by M games or not. I know EB says to enforce it, but most people don't.

I thought it varied from state to state. Anyway, whoever is rating the games really needs a more coherent standard. How is it that Smash Bros. got K, but Melee got Teen? The Teen rating needs to be elaborated. Of course, what would be easier is a simply putting "Adult Language," "Violence", "Cartoon Violence" etc, and actually force the parent to see what the game has.

That's how the old RASC ratings worked. They'd have a little meter showing the severity of content for sex, language, and violence, seperately. It made no age suggestions. I liked that one better.

Of course it had my favorite content warning "Damage to realistic objects". Oh fear.

  4. I think the ESRB should use something like the AMOA Parental Advisory System with red, yellow, and green stickers saying "Life-Like Violence Strong" (i.e. Mortal Kombat), "Animated Violence Mild" (i.e. Tekken), etc. rather than having the KA/T/M system.

They should go one better and have an orange level meaning Moderate. A game like Crisis Zone definitely would fit this level- mowing down bad guys with an MP5K is not really "mild" violence, but it doesn't deserve a "strong" when there's no blood. GTA would likely have 2 or more red labels- one for "Strong Life-like Violence" and another for "Strong Language".

  5. One level of government control could easily snowball into another (i.e. M rated games becoming illegal PERIOD).

An earlier law was passed that requires retailers to display game ratings? That is fine, but don't give them another inch.
I dont see how one leads to the other at all. Yes, you can try to come up with some convoluted argument about how they will then deem games not safe for anyone, or that the restrictions of selling M-rated games to kids doesnt actually work, but thats a ridiculous legal argument. If it wasnt, then alcohol and cigarettes and pornography would be banned in the US. YES I realize its been tried with one of those and yea look what happened.
