Thread: Sega's Wacky Super Monkey Ball Deluxe Ad Campaign

  1. I'm guessing that most SEGA fans, or people who would likely buy a game like SMB, own a gamecube. The gamecube sales of SMB/2 and the Sonic games back this claim up. The sales of SEGA's games on gamecube are one of the few things that went well for SEGA or Nintendo this generation. Its a shame the two didn't work together more closely in recent years.

I'm gonna dust off my wavebird and put Monkey ball in my gamecube right now.

And yet, even though Sega took their sweet time putting these treasures on the other, online-capable systems, there's still no network play.

In any case, Ill start up a new high score thread today. Im not very good at the game but oh well.
Super Monkey Ball's best attribute is the sense of reward it supplies to the player as he gradually learns new shortcuts and steadily improves his score (and although the challenge is immense, the game can be beaten without dying once, so the player never feels like he's being cheated by cheap level designs). Super Monkey Ball is definitely the most rewarding score-based game of this generation. However, it's a shame that the designers decided to fill the sequel with unnecessarily complicated gimmick levels.

Edit: If anyone starts a new SMB Score Attack thread, makes sure to include some, if not all, of the minigames (I'd be especially interested in submitting some scores for Monkey Target and Monkey Bowling).

  3. I just beat Arthropod.

    Fucking hell.

edit: just beat Launchers. Thought it was actually pretty fun. But Arthropod blew ass.

IBTN. That level nearly ruined SMB2 for my by itself (but the overall gimmicky nature of the level design did that in the end). I never did figure out how to beat that level 'properly' (just figured out a timed sequence of stick motions to get through it); and I don't care. Several levels were like that, but that was by far the worst. What the fuck were they thinking??? (Then again, that question can be thrown at any Sega development team nowadays... hur.)

  5. I made the thread. Time to dust off those old Monkey Balls and play them some more.

I wish there was a way to separate SMB2's gimmicky bullshit levels from the first game's awesome and challenging levels. They're all lumped together here as far as I can tell. Also, the rolling sound when you roll down a hill (like in Monkey Target) is totally gone. The sound actually sort of starts up, but half a second later it just cuts out to silence. It's really awkward and stupid.

  7. Just for the record, Arthropod is the worst Monkey Ball level.

    BTN.

  8. I thought it was the grid of switches. SMB2 does have some gems, but they're surrounded by a bunch of garbage.
