Thread: Taito to revive arcade, 2D platformers!

  1. #11
That looks like shit. Just because it is 2D doesn't mean it has to look like an SNES game.

  2. This is one image blown up on a huge screen with the picture taken from a digital cam. You're expecting image quality from that? Wait until the real images come in before the snap judgement.
"I've watched while the maggots have defiled the earth. They have
built their castles and had their wars. I cannot stand by idly any longer." - Otogi 2

  3. =_= Even from the one screen it looks pretty sharp and stylized to me. Reminds me of a cross between Dynamite Heddy and Mr. Driller, stylistically. Can't wait to see more. It looks a little empty, but i'm sure that there's more going on as the player progresses.

  4. It has umbrellas... its gotta be good. What game has had umbrellas and not been good at the same time? I certainly cant think of any.
    A is for action

How many games have had umbrellas? I can think of three that have been out... the Kirby Series, Super Smash Bros Melee and Super Mario RPG.

I'm kinda drawing a blank on any others...

Back on subject, I want to see more of this game before I draw any conclusions.
It would be sweet to see adventure games make a come back in the arcade, though. Although I think they're great, it would be nice to go to an arcade and see something besides light gun games, DDR machines or other games with wacky racing controls. You know, something with a joystick would be fun as well. :-P

    Parasol Stars?

Which was a fun game, btw.

  7. This could have the same improvement as Alien Hominid has over its Flash game counterpart. Taito could have some extra stages and stuff in there. I'd hardly say that it looks like a SNES game. We don't know how the animation is- that could be quite good.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

  8. I've started impressions of this great new PCB here:

It's games like this that make TFP Fanitsu tick. We have been following the release for a while now with much excitement and now I have finally been lucky enough to play it. Prior to release the nice people at Try PCB Shop Akihabara (who had been pushing it with a nice P.O.S. cardboard display) informed me that this game had a release date of 22/06/05 so I had been checking Taito's Game Centure’s regularly since then. However, surprisingly at the time of writing this PCB didn't make it’s Akihabara debut on Taito’s own soil, instead in Try’s very own trusty ‘Amusement Tower’ (the best arcade in the World. The End), Akihabara. Tokyo, Japan.

Upon inserting one’s Y100 you are treated to a tuition of controls; ‘A’ is Attack and ‘B’ is Jump. From these 2 buttons Spica Girl has a vast array of moves at her disposal thanks to her parasol in hand.

    Moves List:

Holding ‘A’ whilst on firm ground stationary allows Spica Girl to defend herself with the protection of her parasol against enemy shots. Depending upon which direction danger is hailing from one can then move the joystick left and right to move your parasol protecting her from any side and upward direction. This action also rebounds enemy shot to where it came from as a handy attack technique.

Holding ‘A’ whist falling mid-air allows Spica Girl to use her parasol to gently fall to the ground Mary Poppins (gor blimey) and Parasol Stars style.

Pressing ‘A’ and ‘B’ simultaneously launches Spica Girl’s parasol into enemies (and back again automatically) only in horizontal directions.

A bit like TNN’s Umihara Kawase series and Capcom’s Top Secret (in a way), Spica Girl can use her parasol weapon on scenery to navigate herself about. Simply wedge your parasol into a wall by pressing attack then use the joystick to get some leverage for a successful vault skyward.

(Not shown) When jumping; Down & Attack causes Spica Girl to break through breakable blocks (or attack enemies from above) like a Super Mario World Mario Spin (minus the spin in Spica Girl's case).

So many moves to master, and again as in Umihara Kawase you can be presented with a short extra cinema tuition between stages explaining these techniques to aid your progress.

    Pt.2 coming soon."
