Thread: College students and Communism: The great retardation

  1. I'm not sidestepping anything. You were both crapping on the study of English because you see it at useless, I'm here to tell you isn't useless. That said, philosophy isn't useless either, but your opportunities for employment are limited in both case.
IBTN, but in the (limited) amount of classes I have taken in fields like English, Comparative Writing, Art History, etc., I see interpretation being a big part of it, and comparisons, and question-asking, and so forth. But no question-answering. So basically students will write a paper where they ask questions, come up with answers, turn it in, and get a grade. But every answer is as good as the last. So its a lot of means without any end. Im not seeing a lot of useful work coming from English departments at universities. And especially not from Philosophy departments. If Im wrong by all means point me to some examples of useful work but really I would think the Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, or Psychology departments are doing a lot more (even though the first 2 are mired under a lot of ridiculous pretentious go-nowhere bullshit - Sociology crosses with Philosophy a lot, and thats where it seems a lot of Sociology professors come from).

Im not saying this is exclusive to the -ologies side of things. I often have a tough time seeing the big picture in my math classes - a "so what" comes to mind when I read about simple groups or whatever. But its not the same. And Im fairly open-minded, seeing as I have a healthy dose of interest in both sides of the fence (just for reference I scored higher on the English portion of my SAT than my math, and the honors classes I took in high school were in history).

Math is considered to be its own language by a lot of people. Asking me how someone can learn math with out learning how to read, is like asking me how someone can learn to read, with out knowing how to read.

So how does someone learn math with out knowing how to read? The same way anyone learns any language.

Though I will admit written text does help people learn complex math subjects on their own. Which is helpful when they do not have the option of an actual person to show them how to do something.

Go check any English curriculum; they're there. In fact, English teachers are some of the most thoroughly prepared educators out there. That teacher you took a writing course with one semester might also be teaching linguistics, literature, methods and techniques, and oral communication; all in the same session.

It's a real treat to see here, when those who have no inkling of what goes into forming a teacher or all the crap teachers have to take, sput off stuff like this. I can understand this from high schoolers, who are generally clueless to the world around them, but from a grown adult? C'mon.
You are such a teacher. All of them spout that sort of shit. They act like their subject is the end all of all the subjects at the school. Every class is nothing but a means for their class. History teachers think everything is part of history, English teachers think English is the soul of humanity, Math teachers think they are the gods of modern society, science teachers think science is culmination of all the other subjects.

When I say this, I don't mean it against you Melf, but teachers like that can kiss my ass. Assholes like that are why I end up having a paper due the same night that I get 60 calc problems to do, because you know "OMG THEIR CLASS IS THE WORLD."

  3. When did this thread become about ripping apart English majors?

I feel like I should be defensive about my major, but, honestly, I have no idea what I'm doing at school anyway.
I thought you were gay.... i guess not.

  4. I joined the communists in first year as a joke. I was just hoping for a t-shirt or a clipboard with the logo on it or something, never went to a meeting. But man it was annoying, like having a desperate ex-girlfriend or being in Scientology or something. They just kept calling and calling and calling and I was always like "no, actually I don't want to go to a showing of Khruschev era Soviet state art," or "you know, I'd really like to spend Saturday afternoon protesting for autoworkers in a city 200 kilometers from here, but Judge Judy's on and if I miss it, who knows when I might get to see it again?"

Meh, I had something typed up, but fuck it.

I'm not going to bother with this argument anymore. This isn't an objective topic so anything that anyone has to say is going to be pointless.

You get a hard on for studying the structure of language and think the world would die with out, awesome, great for you.

Vacuum tube theory makes me cream my pants, awesome, great for me.

It’s a stupid conversation and it makes about as much sense as arguing over breast size on girls. You can make all the logical arguments in the world for how you feel, but in the end no one changes their mind.

  6. IBTN. But.... since when is that the mindset of a TNLer?
I thought you were gay.... i guess not.

well normally I would keep going, because putting sand into vaginas is fun. But this is like the third or fifth time this has come up. Every time they cry, and call me stupid for flinging poo at their major.

It's not fun anymore, and it is a stupid topic.

At least with arguing boobs, I might get to see some boobs.

With this all I get is some people trying to convince me that having a bunch of people study language is crucial to the world not ending. This is retarded because it should be more than obvious from how little I proof read what I post on here that I don’t care.

Math and Science majors ask how the universe works.
Religion and Philosophy majors ask why the universe works.
English majors ask if you'd like fries with that.
To boldly go where lots of men have gone before...

Well... a lot of them are.

The argument of majors... I dunno. It's a pointless arguement like you said. I think nearly every major has a good place in the world, some just lend themselves to getting a job more than others.
