God, this thread is so fuckin bourgeois it hurts. You elitist pricks need to come down from your hilltop estates and feel the pulse of working class America. The workers of this country want and need change, and they will get it through any means necessary. ¡VIVA LA REVOLUCION! METALLICA!

Some departments on college campuses, even in Mississippi, are incredibly left-wing politically. That's mainly because none of the professors are actually from Mississippi. Since competition for jobs in some fields is so fierce, even crappy public universities in Mississippi have the pick of the litter for professors. So the professors in English, philosophy and history departments are usually from all over the country.Originally Posted by IronPlant
That said, I don't know of any college professors that are communists in any traditional sense--certainly none that would support Russian-style communism. I do know some Marxist professors, though. However, none of them would support a revolution or anything like that. It probably just makes them support Medicare and Social Security more that most people.
And about why students are all communists: too much Rage Against the Machine.
The really easy answer for this is that college kids want to change how things work, fuck with the system, etc. I imagine that communism is just an easy outlet for that.

I tend to agree with you. There are no easy causes though to rally around anymore. A lot of people make a big deal about how liberal college campuses are, but I think they are more conservative than ever. Also, in previous decades college kids had things to fight for that were much more concrete, mainly because they were occuring here in America around them. Now they live pretty good lives and not as many people are getting fucked about by laws or whatever. So they only have relatively petty things to fight for, so many people accuse them of being spoiled, etc. There are still plenty of really valid reasons to be upset at our goverment for, but now most of them involve international affairs. Again, those are much harder to fight for. One, because it is taking place really far away, not really affecting your life or those you know personally.
Im not sure where I was going with this rant.

IP brings up a good point. The instant certain people hit college they're all communist. I think, it's either because:
a) they work at a shitty job and don't want to do it anymore -- they want the 'freedom' of communism (dumb, I know)
b) it's seen as intellectual
c) their college life bubble is protected by daddy's wallet
d) they're fucking stupid
