While I'm not a communist myself, I do sympathize more with the communist mentality. But like IP's dad, Ivory Tower politics are what I think you are criticizing rather than true communism (which, by the way, can only look good on paper because it has never really happened on a large scale). I think, though, communism has to be a gradual and voluntary transition- the vast majority of the people have to want a communist society.
As for the whole work ethic thing, I don't buy that. I find the idea of one person profiting from the labor of many others absurd, but that is also because I believe that ownership of land and resources are also absurd.

Communism is pretty much anti-religion. It would make sense for christians to have socialist ideas (many do, unknowingly), but not really communist ideals.
Remember people, communism is a form of goverment, socialism is an economic structure.
