Thread: The Official Metal Thread

  1. Thin Lizzy is badass. Definitely one of the leading inspirations for early heavy metal.

    Cowboy Song FTW.

  2. 40% off everything in the Century Media webstore today.

  3. Anyone check out the NPR year end list? I'd link it but I'm on a phone There's some stuff I've ben meaning to check out and plenty I haven't even heard of. I really dig the Yob record, I've been hearing lots of good things about Disma's release, Negative Plane is interesting to me but I don't know if I could see being into the whole album.

  4. Disma's great, Negative Plane is... black metal. Nothing particularly interesting about it. Check out Bosse de Naga for some good stuff from this year.

If you dig on that cave man DM thing, you should check out Autopsy and the first 2 Incantation records.

As for the list, the only thing on it I'm into is Ulcerate.

    Boo, Hiss.

  5. Iced Earth's first album is such a riff-fest.

Shame that Schaffer ran out of riffs about four songs into his third album.

  6. For anyone interested, I've launched a metal -related blog, will be alot of longform/essay type pieces but the occasional commentary on things I see around the internet metal related as well (such as shakey's above mentioned NPR "Best of Metal" listing. I launched it with two pieces, but this week I'll have up my best of 2011 and an interview with a Black Metal band from Houston called Brimwylf that is making some noise down here. The blog can be found here, www.themetalpigeon.wordpress.com if you're interested in checking it out. Thanks!

  7. Not a fan of the new Symphony X style where they go all Pantera with the bro riffs.

I prefer the older albums (Divine Wings, V, Twilight) where they sound like a Fabio commercial backed up by a bunch of puffy shirt wig wearing aristocrats.

  8. pantera with bro riffs? I see an aggressive, razor sharp attack that is still steeped in intelligent and thoughtful songwriting, but I understand that there's a separation in outlooks on the band now. I prefer the recent model, with all due respect to their older records which are pretty good.
