I got one of Bethlehem's albums, it's the first one, havn't given it much of a listen yet though. I'll try and take the time to check some of that stuff out. Thanks.
I assume you mean stuff like Xasthur/Leviathan? If so, I'm not a big fan, but I can recommend some higher-quality stuff with a similar vibe and a bit more artistic integrity:
Antaeus - Cut Your Flesh and Worship Satan
Mutiilation - Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul
Varathron – His Majesty at the Swamp
Hellhammer – Apocalyptic Raids
Katatonia – Dance of December Souls
Bethlehem – Dictius Te Necare

Velvet Cacoon - Genevieve
KTL - Whatever it's called
Watain - Any
Switchblade - [2006]
Spektr - Near Death Experience
Blut Aus Nord - Any
Axis of Perdition - The Ichneumon Method
Jazkammer - Metal Machine Music
If you're feeling silly: Devil Doll - Dies Irae.
Not all of those are Black/Doom, but I think you'll dig what's going on.
Boo, Hiss.
The self-titled Negativa EP arrived yesterday, and after giving it a couple of listens last night, it's difficult to describe just how disappointing it is. All three songs are poorly constructed, several riffs seem like reheated leftovers from "Obscura," the breakdowns are about on par with what you'd expect from a modern metalcore album, and the bass guitar sounds completely out of place tonally. On the whole, the album just feels half-baked and arbitrarily slapped together with no real purpose or intent behind the music besides fulfilling the bands' personal desires to "experiment" with their sound.
In a time where death metal most needs its true inventors to step forward and expose all the trend-whores and unimaginative simpletons that are corroding the musical community, “Negativa” dampens this listener’s resolve to believe that there are still some bands out there making worthwhile material in this once classic style of metal.
Partially. Mostly though it has to do with the fact that Malefic is a complete clown who continues to pump out material that is lacking in innovation and import.
In other words, there are other offenders out there making much worse music than what he has released while under the name of Xasthur, but in the holistic sense, his music is destined to become irrelevant, and thus unworthy of inspection from anyone that values his/her listening time.
Has anyone heard of Vinland Ghost? I'm listening to their album Skeletal Rites right now, and it's pretty damned good Black/Thrash from Seattle.
myspace link here. Although for whatever reason they only have demos up on their myspace, instead of the actual album tracks.

Well, first it’s important to note that Steeve Hurdle is the only name mentioned in the “music” credits, and if you have enough experience with “Obscura” and “From Wisdom to Hate” (Hurdle is absent on the latter) then you should be able to deduce what that means for this album:
The first track basically just alternates between an “experimental" tapping melody and a seemingly recycled, multi-voice, dissonant rhythm while throwing in a single breakdown for variety’s sake.
After an alright intro, the longer song starts out with a slow and supremely shitty riff, abruptly transitions into a breakdown for no reason (an annoyingly persistent theme on this mini-album), succeeds in building a little bit of atmosphere with some disturbing guitar scrapes, and slowly fades away having said little and accomplished even less.
Structurally, the final is track is almost identical to the first, only with a short and silly bass solo (someone please tell that man to fix his tone) and a longer noise-fadeout.

I would probably be less likely to condemn the band had they simply released this material as a free (or at the most, $4-$5) demo instead of packaging and marketing it as a legitimate release.
Regardless, given Luc Lemay's pedigree as a musician/composer, it is hard not to anticipate any future full-length releases that he and the other band members may become involved in, for if the fruits of both "Negativa" and "From Wisdom to Hate" are any indication, Hurdle and Lemay are at their musical peak when working exclusively as a tandem.
