Thread: The Official Metal Thread

  1. Make no mistake, Eye has its moments, but it's not the "Salt the Earth as We March on Damascus" of Silver.
    Boo, Hiss.

Not a fan. I've tried liking Jane Doe on a few occasions with no improvement.

Irrlicht is really good. That's the only one I've heard. Have you heard more electronic/ambient artists of the time like Popol Vuh? Each of the three I've heard (In den Gärten Pharaos, Hosianna Mantra, Letzte Tage - Letzte Nächte) have been great in unique ways. Lots of 70s material I haven't touched yet.

I just started exploring this musical style within the last four or five months, so all that I'm really familiar with at this point are the major works from a few of the more notable names:

    Robert Fripp
    Brian Eno
    Tangerine Dream
    Klaus Schulze
    Dead Can Dance
    Kraftwerk

I’d say that Fripp/Eno probably have some of the best albums of that bunch, but in terms of sheer proficiency, none can match Schulze’s consecutive output from 1972 - 1978.

  4. So, I found my Luddite Clone CD in a box today, and I'm having a hard time classifying this. Is it grind? Death metal? Hardcore-at-lightspeed?
    Boo, Hiss.

  5. On the subject of Mastodon, anyone else pick up The Call of the Mastodon?

It's a bit on the short side, but its one of the best collections of songs time forgot of any recent band I can think of.

  7. Good news:

Mithras have posted (non-finalized) album art and a (finalized) sample song from their new album, which is due out April 16 in the USA.

My only complaint from the last album was the sometimes muddy mix, and this production seems to be an excellent clean-up job that maintains the astral atmosphere of "Worlds..." while adding a bit more clarity to the mix.

    Bad news:

I finally received the new Aghora release yesterday, and it totally blows; avoid it at all costs, regardless of how much you liked the debut. A more in-depth critique should be forthcoming before I sell it off.
