Thread: The Official Metal Thread

  1. Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao: This is really some next level shit. Gritty grimy and dank. Attila Csihar is one of the best vocalists going - he pretty much makes any record he's on. Anyhow, after a rather disappointing string of albums culminating with the wretched Chimera album, this is pretty experimental and analog sounding. Mayhem never benefited from modern slick productions, and it's good to hear them sounding the way they used to, but playing new material. overall.
    Boo, Hiss.

  2. Been listening to the Ulver trilogy a bunch lately. This brings back memories...
    Boo, Hiss.

  3. The first Ulver album always seemed a bit amateurish to me, but "Kveldssanger" and "Nattens Madrigal" continue to receive rotation whenever I'm in the mood for night-music.

Some other artists to consider if you're looking for something that's crafted in a similar spirit:

Empyrium - Their first album is, like Ulver's, a bit immature in many aspects, but by album number two, and especially album's three and four, Empyrium develop a talent for depicting dark, rustic landscapes.

Nest – while less focused on melody and rhythm than the above band, Nest's music is more designed to create atmosphere and ambience through a simple and peaceful approach to texture and narrative part-writing.

  4. Returning way back to October for this one.

Maybe you saw this interview with Steeve from a few months back, but if not it should give you some hope:
The songs on the MCD as been wrote by me awhile ago. The newest song is 5 years old. So it is pretty old. But those songs was just to have a starting point as a band, a place where we can learn to play together and know each others better.
Can't wait for the new stuff, with input from the other guys. (And I still like/d it.)

  5. That bit of info definitely makes me feel a lot better about the disappointing Negativa EP.

Like I said though a few pages back, anything that Luc Lemay involves himself in is automatically of interest to me given his pedigree with Gorguts.

    RE: Adramelech

For several months now, I've had the nifty re-release from Repulse/Blackened that combines “Psychostasia,” “Seven,” and “The Fall” onto one CD, and while it is a good, interesting release, it’s definitely not up to par with the works from countrymates like Demilich and Demigod.

Reason being, Adramelech hold too closely to established death metal traditions in just about every aspect of their music besides their riff-craft. Vocals, drumming, harmony/textures, etc. are all incredibly standard in comparison to albums like "Nespithe" and "Slumber of Sullen Eyes."

Overall though, the high quality of riff-writing and successful creation of atmosphere make Adramelech an interesting listen, even if they’re not the best at what they (try to) do.

    Some other metal notes:

The new Behemoth album leaked, and it's very typical of their newer style: bland, uninspired death metal with an over abuse of hackneyed, harmonic-minor melodies/harmonies and a complete lack of emotional power, which the band tries to compensate for with an abundance of dull, physical force.

  6. As I said I would in the Adramelech post, did listen to the Demigod album about 5 more times. Both are about equal in my book, just short of greatness. The Demigod album stands out for me with its melody and atmosphere, Adramelech for the guitar playing. I usually focus a bit more on guitar playing than anything else. Do Seven and The Fall compare well to Psychostasia?

  7. The new Mithras CD is finally in-stock in the Candlelight US store for $12 shipped

In the unlikely event that this album disappoints, I'm not sure what I'll do, given that there is literally nothing else metal-related on the horizon that shows any promise whatsoever.

  8. You're fucking retarded. If everything is so unfulfilling as shitty (let alone if Mithras is the savior...) why don't you just kill yourself.

    For fuck's sake.

Because, even though the genre has been in a state of rapid decay since 1996 and has been on life-support for most of the 21st century, a small number of artists continue to innovative successfully within the style, not to mention the fact that volumes of great music exist outside of the confines of metal.

Honestly, this thread's just not much fun if I don't have some sort of positive news to spread every now and then.

  10. lol, oh bourns.

Eh metalwise... nothing really new. I did pick up and enjoy the new megadeth to a certain extent, by far their best album since cryptic writings. I'd like to get my ass to a show sometime soon.
