All you have to do to update your firmware is:
    1) Go to your home screen select "Settings" and then select "Network Update"

    2) Select your Wireless connection

    3) It will prompt you to insert a Memory Stick with at least 14 MB of space free. Once you inserted the MS (or you already have it in), press X button and downloading process will begin. I downloaded the update in a matter of seconds. (download speed varies with different connections.)

    4) DOWNLOAD COMPLETE, it will asks you to press X button to instal the newly downloaded firmware update or press O button to instal later. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PSP CONNECTED TO THE AC ADAPTER IN ORDER TO CONTINUE WITH THE UPDATE.

    5) It will asks for a confirmation. Pressing ">" on the D-Pad will initiate the instalation, pressing O will cancel the process.

NOTE: If you so choose to perform the update at a later time, the downloaded update file can be found under the "Game" category on your home menu.

For those without WIFI, download this file and transfer it to your memory stick

It seems the battery pack has to be somewhat charged too. I tried using just the AC adapter without the battery pack inside and it still didn't work. So now I am just charging it up before trying to execute the installation again.

It wont work on the US version. It would load up and than you'll get an error.

  3. I was wondering...can the PSP be used as a mobile memory card for the PS2? I'd like to grab a file save or two for PS2 games with a PSP and put them onto the mem card for PS2, if at all possible.

    No.

  5. Sony has released another firmware update, 1.52 firmware. It is available in Japan. Major updates include the ability to access UMDs from the Audio menu (discs supporting this are just starting to be released in Japan), and more "security" updates.

For those who still have 1.00 firmware, there is just not enough incentive to upgrade yet.

Impress Watch carries the story, but here's the official Japanese Sony page which would probably be better for those who actually want to do the upgrade. If you're running 1.50 or later, you might as well upgrade since there isnt much of a difference or anything that benefits you.

You can expect a 1.52 firmware release for the American PSP in the next couple of months. Hopefully, Sony will release a firmware upgrade with webbrowser or something that will make people upgrade.

    - Download file here
    - Place it in your Memory StickPSPGAMEUPDATE folder
    - Run it from your PSP Home menu

  6. People are still complaining to Sony about their stuck and dead pixels. Apparently, a user from psphacks.net, owns a LCD TV and had some stuck pixels. He went to Best Buy and they gave him a DVD that flashed, RED, GREEN and BLUE, over and over. This is supposed to "un-stuck" those pesky stuck pixels by making the colors do rapid changes.

So far, it has worked around 60% of the time. This was tried on a PSP that had 6 stuck pixels, and it fixed them all. The only real thing you can do is set the video to repeat and leave it on for a few hours. In Version 2.0, a white and a black screen has been added, so you can periodically check to see if your pixels have been fixed. This video works with all versions of the PSP, from 1.00 to 1.52. Good luck.

Included is a video that does the same thing but for your PSP. Several users have reported success with this video, though several have reported failures. You don't have much to lose, so just give it a shot and let us know your results.

Load and run this MP4 file as if you were loading a movie onto your PSP.

Any talks of emulation or homebrew is all on 1.0 Japanese firmware.

  10. thanks! I'm currently ripping sealab 2021.
what quality profile works best in terms of space to quality? Or does it depend on what you are converting?

My PSP has not been turned on since April 24th. I am so pissed at myself for buying it before GTA hits.

  12. well, I was in pretty much the same boaat, so since there are no moe games to play for this that I haven't already worn out, I figured I'd screw around with it's other features. Pretty sad how excited I was about this thing just a month ago.

  13. A few months ago I used pspvideo9 to convert a downloaded episode of Mystery Science Theater (as I have posted about before) But I did it at work and the original avi file is gone since my boss formatted the systems. I of course still have the 4 converted files on my memory stick, how can I convert them back to normal video file from thm so I can burn a video CD me and my friends can watch on TV (yes, I have Nero, just need to know how to change them from psp vid files to one big video file) Much thanx in advance! (assuming it's possible)

I'm not quite so sure if you can re-encode them to their old size and resolution. But you CAN watch them on your PC with the PSP size and resolution through PSP video 9.

You cant resize them back to normal size. Its like taking an original image and shrinking it smaller. THan taking that smaller image and blowing it back up. All you're get is a pixelated image.

  16. Man, the U.S. needs to be more in synch with their Japanese counterparts. They've already released another update. While minor, the new addition is certainly a cool plus for those that want to hear the music from a game:

June 8, 2005 - Sony Computer Entertainment has announced the availability of yet another marginal PSP firmware update over in Japan. The new update brings the operating system up to version 1.52. In addition to security fixes, the update adds a new "UMD" option under the music header of the main menu, allowing users to play back music directly from UMD.

The update process can be started directly from the PSP, or you can connect to SCE's PSP update page, download the update file to Memory Stick and run it from the Memory Stick section of the PSP menu. Future UMD releases will have the update included.
Remember, this update is only for Japan, so don't try running it from your US PSP.

  17. Thanks to Trial and Bandit for answering my question on video "re"-conversion. I went ahead and just downloaded the MST episode offalimewire. Now just need to split it into two parts so I can have a VCD for my friends.

OK on the firmware update, it takes up 14 MB of space on the stick, does it stay on the stick after it's installed? I'm confused. I was thinking updates would be saved to the internal RAM (pardon any ignorance of how RAM works) Oh well, the new update here in the U.S. doesn't sound interesting at all anyways.

  18. I'm not sure how it works either, but I'm just waiting until the update that includes the web browser.

Here's hoping it supports sounds and flash.

  19. Well, no need to get it now. Can someone here who has done it tell me if you have to keep the 14 meg set up file on the stick after it's installed. Sounds dumb i know but i wanna be sure.

  20. I don't believe you have to keep it on there at all. Supposedly newer gamers will require these new security protocols featured in the update. But I see no reason why there would be a mandate that it remains on the duo stick. Try erasing it.

    That's what I figured.

  22. speaking of firmware updates, word on the grapevine is that tomorrow some cats in spain are releasing a hacked up 1.5 firmware that can run homebrew apps - I saw a video of them playing LTTP and it looked pretty damn legit.

edit: loader to take advantage of some hole in the 1.5 firmware, not a firmware itself

  23. I ain't touching any hacked firmware updates. It may be unstable and corrupt my system. $250 investment is just too much to be gambling with unofficial programs like that.

    If it's a loader, I'm down.

  25. I've been researching the loader for a while today after cka mentioned it, and it really does seem legit. It's being released tomorrow at 9 AM. We'll have to wait for emulators to be made for it, but it really shouldn't take more than a few days.

  26. Well fellas, it's been released. Patented "Swaploit" by the PSP-Dev team, the loader requires 2 memory sticks, one of any size and the one you'll be using to store your programs and emulators. You'll also need the EBOOT.PBP file that you can find with the simple homebrew game "Simpleturn."

The program takes the PBP file and makes 2 directories: one that contains a PBP file that goes in the first memory stick and one that goes in the second.

Boot up the PSP with memory stick 1, and go into Game --> Memory Stick. You should see a picture of the loader. Once you press X on this loader icon, you need to switch memory stick 1 with memory stick number 2. The loader should work and you should be in business!

The only real work is getting the PBP file created. From here on in the only inconvenience is that you must do the swap method every time you boot up the PSP again.

There is a known problem about the PSP locking up at times when simply put into standby. When you're running the loader it's recommended that you do a complete shutdown when it's time to turn it off.

  27. Very interesting. A bit messy, but if it works, it works.
WARNING: This post may contain violent and disturbing images.

  28. Actually, apparently, you don't even need any of the files from ps2dev.

You take the PBP of whatever program you want, and put it on stick 1.
You use PBP Unpacker to retrieve data.psp from the first PBP.
Rename data.psp to eboot.pbp and put it in the corresponding directory on stick 2.

Sadly, I'm stuck with one stick.

  29. Emulation:
    · SWAPloit v1.5 <-- Link to mirrored sites to download SWAPloit v1.5. THIS DOES NOT WORK ON FIRMWARES 1.51 AND 1.52

    Instructions:

    Instructions #1

There IS an exploit or sorts released, however, it's complicated and can possibly damage your memory stick (of which you need 2).

Here's a basic rundown on how to "convert" a normal homebrew program to run on a 1.5:

    - Take a program called the "MS Swap Tool"
    - Select the homebrew file you want to use on your 1.5 PSP
    - Select an Output Directory
    - Click on "Generate Files" and it will make 2 directories on your Harddrive.
    - Copy the stuff in MS1 into a directory like <MSDRIVE>\PSP\GAMES\TEST on your first Memory Stick
    - Copy the stuff in MS2 into a directory like <MSDRIVE>\PSP\GAMES\TEST on your second Memory Stick

Now, to actually launch the file:

    - Take out any UMD that may be in the PSP
    - Go to the Game > Memory Stick menu and highlight the Launcher Icon but don't press any buttons
    - As soon as you press the button to launch the homebrew app, you must quickly swap out your first memory stick with the second memory stick

WARNING: Removing the memory stick while the PSP is accessing it can damage the memory stick and possibly damage your PSP as well.
    Instructions #2

To clarify, what you need to do is first of all have two memory sticks. Memory stick 1 is your "dumby" stick and Memory stick 2 is where you'll end up having your homebrew/emu's/roms

Memory stick 1 can be any size stick (preferrably the 32 MB crap stick you got with your PSP) and Mem stick 2 will be the larger one (as you'll be storing your stuff on it).

Ok, so first I put in my 32MB mem stick and then I ran the program that came with the tutorial (the MSwap Tool). It installs in Spanish and you'll be asked to restart your computer. Restart (the option that says "Ahora" in it) and then run the program. Go up to "Idioma" after the program is going to change the language to English.

Now, any program you want to "convert" you select the Eboot file under "PBP File". Just browse and select the Eboot file. Next you choose where you want your output directory to be. The output directory will be where the converted eboot FILES will go.

You hit "Generate Files" and bam, son, you can now go grab those files from the output directory. Once you find your output directory (the pop up message will tell you in case you forget, after you hit "generate files"), you will notice there are two folders - MS1 and MS2 for Memory Stick 1 and Memory Stick 2 respectively (duh).

There will be an eboot file in each folder. Insert Mem stick 1 into your PSP, hook it up via USB cable or whatever, and copy the eboot file over to the directory:

    PSP\GAME\TEST\Copy-your-eboot-here

After you've done that, you can take out Mem Stick 1 from your PSP and insert Mem Stick 2. Now, copy the eboot file from MS2 (in the output folder) and put it in the EXACT SAME DIRECTORY (PSP\GAME\TEST\Copy-your-eboot-here again) Once you've done that, you're ready to test your reflexes.

Insert Mem stick 1 into your PSP again. Go over to Game and scroll down to "Memory Stick". You'll see the icon for the program (Launcher 1.5).

What you have to do now is to start up the program, quickly take out memory stick 1 from your PSP and insert memory stick 2. You have to do this pretty fast (at least I had to with the damn calculator, lol. The first time I didn't do it fast enough) When you hit the button to start the app, don't even bother waiting for that PSP logo screen to go all the way through - you should immediately begin the swapping process.

I recommend keeping the memory stick door open and being ready to pop that mem stick 1 out and slap in mem stick 2 with haste! I hope this helps some for those who were a little confused by the PDF. I was at first till I read it through a few times and just gave it a go.
