which is better? is MPEG2 an enhanced version of MPEG1? specs? i take it MPEG1 is smaller in file size?

consider this: HDTV is an uncompressed MPEG-2 stream.

yes. i have a choice to convert .ifo and .vob to MPEG1 or 2 before converting them using ideo 9, and i would like to know the differences.

That's a bit of a contradiction. Mpeg2 is a compression standard, there is no such thing as uncompressed Mpeg streams.

As for the original question, the short answer is Mpeg4 > Mpeg2 > Mpeg1.
