Yep. If you look the words "Video CD" appear nowhere on the case.

Philips wisened up a tad later on standardized the VCD format and later releases were actually VCD discs.

I was making the point of the high price of UMDs, which confused me a bit.

Either way, though... have people priced similarly equal portable media devices? Most are more expensive than the PSP, and have screens that are nowhere near the screen of the PSP.

Of course, they have hard drives - which is a big plus in their favor. That still doesn't negate the fact that, after you get your hands on a PSP, you realize that they aren't overpriced. Anybody who thinks that they are - and hey, that's your right - hasn't really looked at comparable portable media systems, in my opinion.

thats just the video side of things

what about the audio experience are UMD's encoded in DTS, or DD 5.1 and scalled down to the PSPs stereo speakers, because honestly if UMDs are just stereo 2.0 then they're even more of a waste IMHO for the home

Stereo 2.0, from what I know.

To be fair, though, while home theater set-ups are certainly getting more popular, everybody still doesn't have one. Hell, I currently just use the speakers that are built in to my television.

The point of playing UMDs on a TV wouldn't be to replace DVD, obviously. It would be, "Hey, I have this movie on UMD, and now I can also watch it on my TV. That's nice." For example, I have Spiderman 2 on UMD now, but not on DVD. I don't love love the movie, but I enjoy watching it. Since I already have the UMD, if the video would be at least close to DVD quality on my TV, I could happily watch that and never bother with getting the DVD. Wouldn't do that with movies I care about, but if it worked good enough of various other titles, then I could get the UMD, watch it at home, and also take it on the road with me.

7 out of 11 are under $20 on Bestbuy. That's not to bad... Didn't bother to check the other site....

  8. And if ANYBODY considers getting a movie on UMD, get it from Amazon. They discount the things so that they are far more realistic. (Kill Bill, for example, is $20 instead of $30.)
