While papasans are incredibly comfortable, I'd advise you against them if you plan on anything more than an occasional sit. I myself have already completely killed one, and the second is on its last legs. What happens is the staples come loose or come out and the wood gets messed up and then the staples rip the pad and once it starts, it can't be stopped.

They also have a tendency to do that tippy thing that chairs missing a pad on one leg do. Also, if you have anyone that weighs over 250, and they sit in it, you my as well kiss it goodbye.

(if you think they feel weird you could try putting a big pillow behind you when you're sitting in it)

The deal with widescreen TV's is that widescreen stuff, the stuff of real quality--HDTV, DVD's, newer games, etc., are typically in widescreen. So even if say... 30% of your viewing time is spend with widescreen stuff, why cater to the lowest common denominator? Watching stretched material isn't really that bad. I use satellite, and most of the stuff looks like compressed crap anyways (through s-video), so there's no reason to care much about a little stretching here and there.

Maybe just a personal preference, but letterboxing doesn't bother me. Side bars are distracting and ugly.

Most TV signals you're going to get are still 4:3, so you'll either have the image stretched, cropped, or you'll have black bars on the sides. I'd rather have black bars on top and bottom for the 5% of TV that I watch in widescreen (only DVDs).

But otherwise, it's a good TV Tubes look amazing.
I was thinking about getting a 30" widescreen for my gameroom.

The 27" Trinitron in our master bedroom died (Tuner went out), so my wife insisted on taking my 27" Wega out of the gameroom. At least I'm able to play on my 32 Wega(HD) in the livingroom, but I don't have a broadband connection out there.

The problem with the 30" widescreen television though, is that the screen height is the same as a normal 24" television. I'm leaning more towards a 27" HD television for my gaming needs. That way I can hook up the good old Saturn or any of the older consoles and have a larger screen to play with.

  5. Can someone explain to me why we are moving towards widescreen other than movies?

I finally got a HD reciever for my 51 inch widescreen TV. Any program that is not in widescreen is output in 4:3 which only gives me a couple of options. I can either watch it with bars at the sides of my screen, or use one of the streching options to make it fill my whole TV. When it is streched you can tell, everybody looks kinda fat and squashed. That is why I hate it when games don't have widescreen, it looks distorted when I stretch it to fill my screen. HD TV is someting you really have to see to appreciate. It looks absolutley beautiful, crystal clear with vivid colors, all on a big screen with no distortion. I hope in the next couple of years that most channels will have a HD counterpart.

Whatever anyone does from here on out they absolutely need to have some form of tetris shelving. Games would look so good in that.

  8. Tasteless... I will have to post some pics of my gameroom with my 16-17th century furniture. El greco on the wall, SMB in the Cube.

  9. I have to dismantle my current gaming setup because I am moving, so this is the last chance I have to snap and post a few pics:

I'd take some snaps of my room if it weren't for the horrible puke yellow carpeting. We've had this house for over a year, and we still haven't changed the carpet.
