Thread: Free Comic Book Day

  1. Free Comic Book Day

Well, it's almost time for this years Free Comic Book Day! I've never participated in one of these in the past, but I want to get back into comics (I haven't read them regularly since Ghost Rider) and this seems like an awesome place to start.

One of the free comics that certain stores will have is the Star Wars Ep.III comic (issue 1)! There's a whole list of all the possible free shit at www.freecomicbookday.com along with a store locator.

Can anyone who's been to one of these in the past tell me about it? Do you get "all" of the comics listed on that page, or just one? It would be really cool to get all of those freebies, because then I could jump into a couple series if any of them end up being good.

In a slightly related note, I just got "Lex Luthor : Man of Steel" issues 1 and 2, and I think it's a fantastic series. Can't wait to see where they take it.

Depends on the store you go to. Some will let you grab everything, or give you a bag with everything. Others will only let you have 1. The retailer does pay for them, but a very reduced price. My advice: pick up a couple of comic (about $10 worth), grab what you want of the freebies, and if the retailer gives you any shit, stop the transaction and go to another store.

  3. Not all stores get all the comics too, or only a certain amount of each. Some years they have too many, some they have not enough. This seems to be the worst year yet, unfortunately.

  4. The first year I participated I was able to nab several comics at my local comic shop. Last year they only let me have one. I hope they let us take a few this year. If not, I have several comic shops in the area I can go to

The first one I went to was a harsh reminder of why I stopped collecting in the first place. I have no idea how these stores stay afloat.
"Chuy, you're going to have a magical life. Because no matter where you go, it's always going to be better than Tucson."

  6. I don't go after anything superhero related anymore (teh nerdity!), but every now and then I'm in a shop to pick out a few issues or series related to aliens, darkminds, warlands or whatever gets my interest. Last time I went shopping for any, I've heard one of the owners mention of me "it's like he doesn't collect comics anymore..."

It's not like I hang around in geeksville wearing a superman t-shirt yaking over boardgame rules all day either pal!

  7. I still read some superhero books, but stuff like Y: The Last Man and Fables are my favorite reads of them all (and I just get those in trades).

  8. I think I'd like to check out some Udon stuff. It's beautiful, but is it any good?

They rely on the art and the license to sell. At least that's been my experience. The only 80s license I read is GI Joe and GI Joe: Reloaded, but those aren't Udon books.

  10. I bought Cannon Busters #1 the other day because Halverson raved about it.

The art is really good, but I'm not too keen on waiting 2 months per issue for a story I can read in less than one bathroom trip.

Lex Luthor #3 came out Wednesday, and I'll be picking that up tomorrow morning while I'm looking for free comics.
