I don't get that comment because WW had all of SoT's puzzles plus new ones, and even the new ones were based on the same design.Originally Posted by Opaque
I disagree.a better story, better use of in game story telling
However, WW did have too much fighting which wouldn't have been such a problem if they had fixed the problems I had with SoT. It didn't become an issue until late in the game when the enemies started getting harder, but once I started trying to manipulate enemies so that I could divide and conquer I ran into the same context-sensitive issues I had in the first game. If you get surrounded it's literally impossible to roll out of the way and if you're up against enemies that don't let you jump off them then there's nothing you can do. The obvious answer is "Don't get surrounded" but this becomes another issue when the enemies are purposefully boxed into specific areas and will walk into invisible walls that only affect them if you try to lead them anywhere.
At the very least, don't give enemies huge lifebars. At one point late in the game I had a broken sword which meant it took forever to kill enemies. Then they gave me an even stronger sword but immediately followed it with tougher enemies that took just as long to kill with that sword as regular enemies did with the broken sword. WOW, THANKS FOR THE UPGRADE.
Then there's the numerous glitches (I had to reload a save game once because sound didn't work for a cutscene), the way there's multiple endings and achieving the second one means searching everywhere for hidden entrances and you can't get some of them if you've gone past a certain point (and some of them may not be accessable if the game glitches in certain ways), how some areas are set up for the sole purpose of being annoying and the way they didn't quite finish thinking through all the areas. For that last point, I'm thinking of areas such as where the Dahaka would chase the Prince from the coffin until he reached a water curtain, but the point where you entered the hallway wasn't blocked. So, uh, why didn't the Dahaka just walk through the open door since he was obviously waiting in the doorway?
Personally, I liked a lot of what they did with WW and I did like how they changed his character based on the design and execution. I'm not so sure the continutation of such will be as well done and I think they could probably do something more interesting by trying to go back to the ways of the old Prince, but we'll see. In any case, I thought WW was pretty good but it got rushed out the door way too quickly and suffered in a lot of areas, a few more months could've given it the bug-testing and balance workout that it so desperately needs. That's what I'm wondering. He worked on SoT so it couldn't have been very long ago, if it happened at all.Originally Posted by Tain

That's so ironic since when I first played the original tomb raider on Saturn, my first thoughts were "Wow, this is great, it's like playing a 3D Prince of Persia"Originally Posted by marwan

I mean of course the enviromental puzzles that made up 80% of SoT's gameplay. You know, figuring out how to go from the fourth story down to teh first without dying, that was a puzzle.Originally Posted by Glass Joe

Even the Gameboy Color version of Tomb Raider played like PoP. That was a mighty good game btw.
"Chuy, you're going to have a magical life. Because no matter where you go, it's always going to be better than Tucson."
That ran rampant through both games and IMO was better in WW.Originally Posted by Opaque
Obviously you didn't get any of the game breaking bugs. Very annoying when you are near the end. Personally I liked the fact that in the original every area was new except for a select few. In WW you had to backtrack a lot more which is when I got a game breaking bug. Also the boss fights were not really more impressive than a normal enemey with a longer health bar. The Golem's and the Dahaka were the only real bosses worth mentioning.
D
What about the Griffin?
Well different opinions aside, I'll say that while SoT was one of my favorite games ever I couldn't even finish WW, and I finished Musashi Samurai Legend. Also at gamerankings WW scored about 9 percent lower on average, which shows that, in general, people thought it was a step down from the first for whatever their reasons may be.
If this same step down happens again I won't even buy 3, but by the sounds of things you'll love it.
How could you say better story if you didn't even finish it? The parts that revealed all were WAY towards the end.
All of that aside, I agree with you that it is just a difference of opinion. I really loved SoT. I would give it around an 8 to an 8 1/2. I think the stuff that they added/changed for WW put it up in the 9 or more area. I couldn't give a shit about gamerankings or the people that cause those numbers.
