Seeing as how many analysts don't expect to see the PS3 pass up the Xbox 360 IN AMERICA until around 2009 (if even then), I don't see your point.

seriously dude the 360 hasnt sold that many units and if the PS3 hits this holiday season it wont even matter

here it is 5 months almost since launch and they still can't get product to the stores, theyre at what only a little over a million or 2 million here theyre not gonna suddenly ship and sell 7 million between now and november

The cheapest bluray player has a MSRP of $499, and graphics chip in the PS3 will be equivalent to a the GPU from a video card costing anywhere from $400-$600.
Factor in the CPU, hard drive, and all the other bits and it's easily a $500 machine.
It's more than I'd be willing to pay, but it's not that bad.

you know what though, I'd be ok with less of the BS stuff (500 million ports on it USB 2 HDMI etc etc) maybe a little cheaper of a GPU and no blu-ray to have a 300 dollar system instead of a 500 dollar one

I thought the gaming scene was dying in Japan? It may have changed over the past few months or years or however long it has been, bbut I remember people on this board talking about how many japanese just aren't playing games as much. And didn't alot of people say that western developers are starting to put out better games and that most western games aren't that popular? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I could have sworn I'd seen some big threads related to these topics at some point or another.

If this is the case, wouldn't that make the west the better market to aim for? I know that there will always be a market for and from japan, but it seems like it is not the big powerhouse it once used to be.

I think a lot of people are in a holding pattern now. I mean when Xbox launched and for the next month or so, I was even tempted to get one when I really don't play any of the games 360 is offering except Dead Rising which isn't out yet. But now that PS3 date has roughly been announced, I think a lot of people are in waiting mode and since they still can't stock the shelves, I'm basically thinking forget it. PS3 will, I predict, sell more systems by close of 2006 than the Xbox360 has totally by close of 2006, as long as they have enough made.

As for price -- personally I want bluray and am willing to pay 500-600 for the system because it will serve as both a next gen video machine and a game system. I also want wireless out of the box etc. I'd rather pay more upfront instead of having to buy addons later, like the 360 is doing.

That's why Gates himself went to speak to the Japanese media at the 360 conference last summer, right? That's why they got a Japanese design firm to consult on the 360 design, right? That's why they dropped a ton of money on Mistwalker, right? That's why they took units away from the North American launch to sit on Japanese shelves so they could send a message to the Japanese market, right? That's why they had massive launch day events across Japan, right? That's why Moore himself said expanding their Japanese marketshare was a priority for Microsoft this generation, right?

Xbox 360 will be a distant third in the console race in all regions. I thought the 360/DC comparisons were silly pre-launch, but at this point it's looking more and more apt.

are people serious when they say theyd pay 500 dollars for a PS3? I dont know 400 - 500 bucks just seems so much to pay for a console IMHO

It does to me, but the wife thinks $500 is okay if it can play Blu-Ray. Even though we don't have an HDTV yet. Go figure. Not saying I will buy it at launch, but anything's possible
