doesn't matter what the price is. it's SONY and the hype alone will sell it.
yep same here. this shit happens every damn time with every system. Anyways, this is just me, but i suspect the price would be around $350-$400, which i have no problem with.....heck i'd even pay $500 for the PS3 knowing it will have the same success as the PS1 an PS2.Originally Posted by Andy

Yeah, for the same reason Dragonmaster Dyne posted. Plus, those mandatory bundles the stores make you buy at launch will pretty much hide the high launch price (if there is a high launch price). The Premium 360 retailed for $399 but people were still willing to pay $600-800 for the bundles. I see the same thing happening with the PS3.Originally Posted by ElCapitan
really tho for $500 you get blu ray and 3 generations of systems. it's not bad, but still not a price i would pay.
Has Sony explicitly said like, "YOU WILL DEFINITELY BE ABLE TO PLAY BLU-RAY OUT OF THE BOX WITH NO ADDITIONAL PERIPHERALS"?
Because, well, if I was a fellow hardware manufacturer and had to charge $800 for my blu-ray just to break even or whatever I'd be pissed that Sony is dumping a $500 box that does the same shit. In fact, I'd probably file a lawsuit against them. Its very Microsoftian.
Those cards are slick but if they think people will pay $300 for them they're sniffing glue.Originally Posted by Dragonmaster Dyne
Yeah, I mean overall it is a good deal, and I have come to the conclusion that I am going to get a PS3 if I can pre-order one, but I don't see the average joe buying one off the bat. Maybe there are enough hardcore gamers out there that will buy one, hell I am.Originally Posted by Dragonmaster Dyne

Diff, PS3 will playback BD movies out of the box, Sony aint pulling a Microsoftian on us!
they dont have to. from what i've read they'll be like gpu cards. different amounts of ram, lower core speeds and the like. the "cheap" end ones are supposed to be $100.Originally Posted by diffusionx
and that's not even considering the offerings from Ati/Nvidia which are reumored to be developing their own that might piggyback on future gpu cards somehow, or just be an extra couple of chips.
Has it occurred to anybody that Sony might be talking up the price of the PS3 to
a) Make it seem valuable, and
b) Announce a lower price before launch and suddenly make it seem cheap?
Maybe. but maybe not. Maybe I am naive here, but I really see this selling to people who aren't necessarily that into video games. I see people who are simply into technology giving this a go and I think that is the big market. It's a DVD player with HDMI (probably upconversion), Bluray, Ps1-3, wi fi, possible HD, which means possible wireless media center (mpeg, avi video etc.)...
We have to all understand that the videogame market we grew up with is gone. This is not a game console anymore. Things have changed way too much to even think that. I mean we paid 200 for a Genesis, over that for the NES power pack, 300+ for the Saturn, and they did diddly squat outside of play games.
500-600 is nothing for a good system with so much versatility. I mean, you guys are spoiled by DVD players that are now 100-200 bucks. I bought mine the first year it came out for 600+ and you know what? It is still working great. First gen Sony. Not like the cheap 200 Sony players they make now. Laserdisc players were a fortune...my grandparents found an old receipt with their first VCR they bought back when I was a kid. 1,000+ for a VCR and the first VHS tapes we got? Star Wars! It cost 110 USD and is even serial numbered (still have it).
My point for all this is that we are going to pay 500-600 for this system and personally I want to. Listen, the cheaper the system, the cheaper the components and the cheaper quality we are going to get. I would much rather pay more upfront for a solidly built system. Give me better bluray components and charge me 600. I want this thing to work 10 years from now. Quality is worth paying for...This thing will pretty much replace 2 consoles, a DVD player, and more. So I can hook this up to my TV and it can be my primary console, DVD player, etc. -- that isn't so bad for 500-600 bucks.
Off topic: where does HVD fit into all this? They are already out, do 720p and 1080i, and are cheap. HVD players are around 200 and the discs are about 15 bucks...so we potentially have 3 formats for competition?
