Thread: New Shiggy E3 interview

  1. He seems a little too enclosed for my tastes since he seems to have no idea what's going on besides heresay regarding the other console stuff.

I'm hoping that he gets his shit together and starts cranking out the Supermario 64's and Zelda OOT's but that will probably never happen again as we're probably going to get inklings of his greatest works with the other teams developing the titles with inspiration from him. Zelda Twilight Princess and Mario 128 could potentially be great but time will tell.

I'd love to see more original games though instead of the same sequels to their games. We've had enough Metroid Prime, Zelda and Pokemon games for a long time while Mario just wastes away in various spin-off nonsense titles when he should be doing stuff better than what Sunshine was as much as I liked the game. He should make another Waverace and new titles with appealing characters.

I already call bullshit on the controller because nobody really wanted to copy the GC controller design since it was so weird (although I happen to like how comfortable it is and hot good it is for regular Nintendo developed games).

  2. I know Shig isn't a paid/trained spokesperson.... but those two comments made me shake my head.

IGNcube: Can you give us an update on Mario 128?

Shigeru Miyamoto: [Chuckles] I'm just really sorry. I think I've given people the wrong impression with Mario 128. With all the questions I'm getting about this, I really feel like I've done people a disservice. In regards to Mario 128, we're currently doing a lot of Mario experiments back in Kyoto. We are definitely going to have a new Mario for Revolution. Whether or not that's 128 or not, I can't really say. It might be a new Sunshine. We're not sure. We're doing a lot of Mario tests right now for the Revolution.
My question to you is, if we made this game would you buy it?

    IGNcube: Absolutely.

Shigeru Miyamoto: Well, we obviously can't ignore that. Okay, we'll get the Eggplant Wizard coming back.
Of course he will buy it .. everyone that has ever owned an NES would consider buying a new Kid Icarus.

It just reinforces the idea that they don't listen to any of thier fans.

"We don't want too many games involving the same themes or characters."

Someone else mentioned this statement. I know it's cool now to hate on Nintendo, but.. wow.. he's worried about third parties doing that??

Mario Sunshine still sold plenty well, as long as they make a real update to Mario 64 it will sell gangbusters. Prime 1 sold excellent, a full Metroid adventure at a system's launch will have far better appeal than Prime 2 did last season. This is an ideal situation for a fence sitter who likes Halo but also enjoys both Mario and Metroid. A new Prime game can push said fence sitter into buying a Rev.

See, though, this type of thinking is what has diluted Nintendo's franchises over the years... Mario/Zelda/Metroid/whatever sold "good enough", so lets just make another one!

The problem with that is that each game is selling less than the one before, and the interest just isnt there like it used to be. Its kind of like Star Trek, really... the franchise probably peaked with TNG, but then they kept making all these new ones because the ratings were still "good enough", but now look what happened, overshadowed by newbies like Half-Life and Halo.

Nintendo really should keep away from one or two of these franchises for Revolution. No Zelda, and no Metroid or something. Just to stoke the fires. Scant releases is what made them such huge industry events, after all. Now theyre just another game on the release schedule.

  6. I agree with Diff, except that Nintendo's fucked either way. No big releases and people will complain about the lack of Metroid or Zelda or Mario or whatever, but if Nintendo keeps releasing them at the rate they are now then they lose whatever importance they once had.

  7. They can make a baseball game, a dance game and whatever, but make up new characters for them. Nintendo still needs their 3 main franchises, it'd be stupid not to make another Zelda. Just spend the time changing things up and there is no problem. 1 new game of a franchise every 2 years isn't overkill. Metroid had a really long break and Prime did great because it was a franchise game that was spun into a new game with the same classic feeling of its roots. (I'm not counting portable games because they don't count. Fuck portable gaming).

Then you will be sad to learn that it will become more and more an integral part of the future of the games industry

  9. A new Mario SunShine wouldn't be too bad, especially if they would cut out all the performing-tasks-crap and focus on those special minimalist space levels. That was old-skool platforming bliss, in 3-D (so it CAN be done).
