What is his medium, than? He certainly sucks in person. Worst. Presenter. Ever.

Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

Exactly. It's not just a matter of spin (MS does its share of this as well). Kutaragi (and Sony generally) always seems to generate a crazy aftermath of wildly favorable press which, typically, is even more speculative than the initial spin.

My computer plays NES games better than my NES does. My computer can then do a lot of other things equally well. Would you say that a typewriter is better than a computer? It is dedicated to writing letters, where a computer is not. As well, as already has been mentioned, the PS2 and Xbox play DVDs perfectly fine, no less so than dedicated DVD players.

The belief that a machine dedicated to doing one thing does it better than a machine that does multiple things was certainly true when technology was still growing up. As technology gets better and better, there's no reason that hardware can't do multiple things as well as hardware that only has one purpose. The biggest requirement is that the company making said product just puts in a bit of time to refining the options presented in their product.

I think the question is whether or not a new "does everything" console will be able to perform as well as a new dedicated gaming console when they both come out at the same price, and I don't think that would be the case unless there's some shortsidedness in the development or pricing of the dedicated system.

It's not really fair to compare computers to dated tech, and you can get DVD players that play DVDs just fine for much less than a PS2 or Xbox. I imagine that when they approach the prices of those systems, they provide better functionality than the systems, and if you want that for your DVD playing and only want the Xbox for Xbox gaming, you're paying extra for something you don't need that is worse than what you already have.

So you're saying there will be something that will play PlayStation 3 games better than the PlayStation 3?

That'll never be possible. PS3 is the pinnacle of human endeavors in supercomputing. There'll NEVER be anything more powerful than a PS3. Not EVER!

PS2 is an excellent game console, and only average at playing DVD's. Yet I bought it as a game machine, and at that, it excels. The DVD playback feature was just a bonus, adding nothing to the cost of the machine since PS2 games used a DVD-ROM drive for games, anyway.

Multi-purpose consoles are alright with me, so long as Capcom, Konami and others still make games for them (and they will).

Actually, the required licensing fee from the DVD consortium (of which Sony will actually recoup a little of) does add a cost, which is why MS did the whole "you need the remote to play movies" thing. Instead of paying the fee for every Xbox sold (when many of them very well may never be used to play movies) it was attached to the playback kit.
