Well, while I somewhat agree with this, I've been waiting 10 years for a 3D mario, so as long as they release one that has the platform aspects, mushrooms, fire flower, etc.. then they can move on to other properties. But let's face it, Nintendo has to go on franchises, because otherwise people won't be drawn to buying the games.

  2. (as others have said) I think just a few elements like the fire flower and racoon suit/leaf power up would go a long way to making a new game fell like the old, no matter how free roaming the actual gameplay is. Can you imagine being able to sail over the ocean in Sunshine with the racoon tail, alight on an island and tail-smack some enemies? Would be a thing 'o beauty. Oh well, I still liked Sunshine. The beautiful setting and those sweet obstacle course levels went a long way for me.

  3. Sunshine was sort of a disappointment to me, I would probably pick up a revolution as a second console if it had a good mario game.

  4. They could easily make shell chaining work in a 3D Mario game, just add in a lock-on function: hold the jump/action button as he runs at a turtle and he locks onto the shell. Simple.

  5. Lock on in a Mario game?

    No.

It worked in Zelda, it can work in Mario.

  7. I agree with sethsez. A lock on in Mario is pointless and defeats some of the challenge in the gameplay. Mario is not Zelda.

  8. Well, lock on is the best idea I have for jumping on shells in a strictly free roam environment.

Or they could have 2D "hot points" in the stages: You have one huge stage that you can free roam in but there are "hot point" platforms sprinkled throughout the stage that switch to a temp fixed side view when you step on them. After you fight all the baddies on the platform, then hop off and go back to free roam.

Zelda is not all about the combat, and even then, the lock on does not take all the challenge out of fighting.

However, Mario is all about precise jumping. That' the entire reason Mario exists.

  10. I guess that's why he's not a game designer.
