Thread: Rakubiki Jiten DS

  1. Game Boy Advance Rakubiki Jiten DS

Anybody here pick this up, know somebody who picked it up, or read any thoughts from somebody who picked it up? It is a dictionary program for the Nintendo DS that came out recently, which has a nice little feature of being able to translate from Japanese > English, and vice versa. If it is decent enough, it might be a nice substitute for a pocket electronic dictionary.

The question, though, is for somebody who is on the English speaker side of things, is the dictionary useful enough?

I'm doubting that anybody here will actually have this, but I thought it was worth a shot.

  2. EDIT: I had a post here but then I looked up more info on this thing and realized I was all wrong on it. I thought it was more of a kanji jiten then an eigo one.

Does this thing have serious kanji functionality? That would be the only reason to get it. NCS' description makes it sound like it just translates into/from kana.

If it does have 4000-5000 kanji I'd defnitely get this, as it'd be cheaper/better than those keypad-entry digital Japanese dictionaries everyone has. If it has 15 000+, then I can just toss out my moldy 5 kilogram jisho.

  3. The problem is, I'm not sure how English-friendly it is. It seems like it might be a Japanese dictionary for Japanese people, and then also have some English <> Japanese function. That's why I'm trying to find out about it.

I really don't understand why, with all of the electronic Japanese <> English dictionaries as there are out there, that one meant first for English speakers has still not come out. (Or, if there are, I have yet to find one.) I'd love to see Nintendo take a chance, mix this up a bit to be suited to English speakers, and release it over here. I think the more interesting, multi-use stuff like this that comes out for the DS, the more attractive it will be to people.
