It had been rumored within ABC that he was pretty bad off, so I'm not too shocked, but it's still a surprise. I have fond memories of watching him on the news, and my mother loved working with him when he'd come to the DC branch of ABC. She always loved working with him, and is devastated over his passing.

Peter was a smoker. He quit for a long time, but relapsed after 9/11. I think that's what she's referring to. ABC just did a touching tribute to him, with footage of him mentioning how little has been done to control tobacco in the United States.
