Thread: AMD 64 or 64fx?

  1. AMD 64 or 64fx?

I was having a bit of a problem on deciding what brand of processor to get. I know the fx is good for gaming, but the price point is well out of my league and I might go after something like the k8 3200+. I would however like to wait and see if there are any more options worth looking at.

This is also going to factor on the type of motherboard I'll get, but I haven't even narrowed down the list yet.

you don't need an athlon fx unless you plan on doing a bunch of workhorse-related stuff like 3d rendering/video & audio mastering/CAD work etc. And even with that you'd be better off with a high-end Intel chip for that sort of stuff.

An athlon 64 normal works just fine. A64 3000+ Venice core overclocks relatively well, so if that's your cup of tea that's probably one of the best processors for the money.

  3. The 3000+ and 3200+ Athlon 64 Venice processors will give you the most bang for the buck right now, they're great for gaming PCs too.

  4. I live right next to cybergb.com which has both processors listed for $179.99 and $239.99. I'm not sure if I wanna hold out and see what I can get for a better deal.
