Let's hope Victrix doesn't see this. He may start hissing and hiding from the light.
This is kind of a tough one to explain, but it's pretty damn awesome.
NaturalMotion's Endorphin 2.5 was shown of at Siggraph 2005.

Look at the upper-left video first. It's amazing stuff to see.
Long story short, this program seems to take dynamic physics ragdoll-style animation and throw in a system of muscles and slight artificial intelligence to handle things in real-time.
If this kind of technology were to be put into a game, you could shoot an enemy at different angles and he'll stagger back properly instead of just becoming limp, even down a staircase. Or, as the football examples in the video demonstrate, the characters could properly move their hands (and the rest of their body) to shield their head and catch their fall after being thrown into the air.
Not only that, but with the car jumping example, you can see the way the character could wind up in a predefined pose after any physically simulated scenario. This could lead to some really cool stuff in a game.
Oh, and if you check out the main site, there's a free personal learning edition (!) to dick around with.

Dj found out about this a while back. Pretty cool stuff.
I was looking for dl of it on the web, but didnt find it back then. Personal learning edition definately looks like something worth checking out.
Anyone know what codec is needed for those .avi's?
I'm using a mac, and QT can't play it.
Did you pick up the demo? They were giving out the PLE on the showfloor.Originally Posted by Tain

I'm not sure what sense of the word "realtime" is being used for, but isn't Endorphin an animation tool? It's not like Havoc or something.
It's currently used to get canned animation created, but it generates everything; the AI, the physics, all of it, in real-time. Very accurately, too.I'm not sure what sense of the word "realtime" is being used for, but isn't Endorphin an animation tool? It's not like Havoc or something.
I don't see why this approach couldn't be integrated into a game, even though it'd probably be on a next-gen platform.
The football demonstration was great. EA needs to look into this.
That fucker even plays unfinished BT-downloaded files. It's amazing.Originally Posted by Nomi
I must fiddle with this program. Must.
