Thread: The East and the West

  1. The East and the West

We all play games and most of us don't give a damn about where a game was made as long as it's fun. Naturally, as games have evolved, developers have been influenced (copycatted) by other developers (usually the developer that produces the most popular title).

What obvious influences in games have you noticed lately and are their more copycats in the East or the West?

Lately I've noticed the GTA Syndrome rearing its ugly head a lot, but mostly in the west.

And with this small (minded?) statement, you completely destoryed any legitimacy this thread had.
    Time for a change

Because all of the GTA-inspired games have been GREAT.

  4. I've mostly noted that Hulk Ultimate Destruction and Spider-Man 2 make excellent use of the GTA formula so it makes the games all the better for it.

I haven't seen any japanese games be really influenced by western design lately though.

If by GTA clone you mean other games that put you in the role of a gun toting gangster then you're missing the point. The whole idea behind GTA is very good for the industry (large, seamless, free-roaming worlds with or without mission based gameplay. Non-linearity is nice sometimes but missions work also.). It's something that when implemented correctly can improve almost any genre.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  6. Final Fantasy XI, geez. Not that i touched it, but it's kind of obvious.

WayForward (Shantae and Sigma Star) loves getting inspiration from Japanese games.

GTA: whatever it was has a few rythm game-type games and supposedly gathers ideas from all genres.

It's hard to tell, unless the developer admits getting ideas from other games. The game market is so old and varied now that you can't just say it was Super Mario Brothers or Tennis for Two inspired.
I'm kind of stuck on eastern-developed games, so i can't see much one way or the other.

What about that upcoming Sega game with the triads and what not?

I think it was Shenmue-ish or something.

    Really?

What western influences did it have?

I eat Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Thai food. Japan has McDonald's and KFC.
