These are some fancy-ass sticks.
HI GUYZ,
Hoping someone here has made a wood panel and can lend some advice.
I'm finally building my arcade cab's control panel, and I'm having a dilemma; I have Sanwa JS01 balltop joysticks;
I'm mounting to wood, and my panel is 19mm thick. I figure I have 3 options;
1. Top mount the stick, recess the mounting plate.
This option is probably what I am tending to think would be best, but I'm worried about having shit on the top of my panel (screw heads, etc) so I'd have to cover the panel with something (probably acrylic glass) - but I'm not real confident in my ability to pull that off.
2. Bottom mount the stick, and have a really short stick.
I've already tested this on some offcuts, and while the stick is pretty short, it's still definitely useable.
3. Bottom mount the stick, recess the mounting plate a bit, and have a slightly longer stick.
This is probably the compromise solution which I'd be most comfortable with. I'd get some extra stick height, and it's something I'd be confident in attempting. My only concern is going too deep and compromising the strength of the panel.
So basically I am asking - How important is the height of the stick? And if you've done a similar project, how'd you mount your sticks?

Top mounting would be ideal, and the easiest way to do that is to layer the top panel with the topmost layer being the same thickness as the mounting plate.
If you'd rather just attach it from the bottom, you could just use thinner wood. You don't need to use 3/4" wood for the top panel, 5/8" is more than adequate.
I top mount your mom.
