Thread: Getting jaded on gaming

Yeah, today's comics have gotten better since the dark days of the 90's, but it still annoys the fuck outta me to have origins rewritten, secondary/tertiary mutations and other unnecessary and ultimately reversible changes to characters (like DYING and organic webbing, for instance). I understand that comics need to cater to today's market, but instead of fucking up existing characters, why not just make new ones? Anyone getting interested in the classic characters can catch up with the history very easily with all the trades being published and online resources, but that's for another thread.

And hey, part of the fun of being a collector of anything is going out to get it!

  2. I keep getting yanked back to halo sometimes, even if I'm not very good at it.

You're right on making new heroes. I recall that spider-girl should have happened already in this time frame (dunno if they canceled that). I'm thinking they could already put other replacements on other characters like bat-man and captain america as they came from what, the late 30's-50's? They should be cripples right now! The angle I saw for Steve Rodgers being replaced with John Walker could work as a good angle now that Walker has already been in his shoes once, plus he's younger and has the experiance needed to permanently take the outfit. Nightwing also gets the nod for being up as the next batman, because he's been with Bruce since the beginning, he NEEDS to take over.

The problem comes when you stop doing it for fun and start thinking like a collector. You're bound to hit the saturation point when you realize you're spending quite a bit of money on pretty boxes to line your walls.

Go back to how it was when you were a kid, and your parents bought you 2 games a year (birthday and christmas). Don't buy a game because it got a decent review, or it has a good soundtrack, or nice art, or whatever other reasons people play shitty games. Leave the mediocre titles on the shelf. Buy one, finish it, move on.

I've already started finishing games on my pile and selling off some I KNOW I will never play (Harvest Moon GBA), uselessly redundant titles (Rayman Advance), etc. If I had the balls I would sell them all and buy them back one by one, beating them along the way.

I would love to finish a game, look around, and say "I have nothing left to play. Let me go buy a game."

  4. Thanks Mzo, you just reminded me of all the other games I have to play now that I've been collecting them on the cheap.

And so I always have this feeling of procrastination, even when I'm playing something, it doesn't go away. Like I should be playing something else to get it off my list instead. It's rough. I think I need to stop slacking and play something right now.
    Everyone is busy too!

Just get one game, and focus on the game alone. Don't play or think to much about any other game untile you finish it. Remember, your spending your money of these games, so you might as well get your moneys worth out of them by finishing them.

  6. Yea, online seems to restore some of the fizzle to games. But I think it can also kill the love too. When you're used to playing Vs with other people, or MMOing, it can make the single player experience boring.

We'll have to see how Mario Kart and Animal Crossing DS turn out.
You don't have to be smart; you don't have to know the facts, you just have to be confident.

I'm looking forward to see how the upcoming games take advantage of the online environment, especially LIVE Arcade (the possibility of playing games like TMNT with three other people online is fantastic).

If you're really feel jaded about games, do what I did. Just pick a game or two that you really like and play the hell out of them. Forget about the other games and you'll enjoyment of the hobby will increase. If you can't even enjoy one game, then it's time you quit this hobby and do something else.
True, true. Even though my gaming interests are dwindling, I've not played a game (KOF 2k3 Live) this much in a long time. Pick 1 or 2 games and stick with them. I've had just as much fun playing my old titles than I have playing the new releases.

  8. take a break for a while, maybe 3 months, a lot of us get this way and its because you have saturated yourself. dodge gaming and gaming news for while and in that time frame, decide to what degree you want to come back.

I completely agree with this. Once you get hooked on an MMO, it's over for offline, single-player games with the exception of the really good ones.

DC Comics actually tried to solve this when they unveiled the multiple Earths concept. In 1960, Earth 1 had the current DC superheroes living as the "young" individuals we're familiar with, whereas Earth 2 had the DC superheroes aged to their older selves since they have been around since World War II. In fact, Earth 2 had a middle-aged Batman and Catwoman married (I think) with a daughter, the Huntress.

Every year, the old heroes from Earth 2, the Justice Society, would team up with the younger heroes from Earth 1, the Justice League of America. This went on until DC editors decided that there were too many Earths (by around 1985, there were about seven parallel Earths), so they decided to revamp the entire DC universe into just one Earth with the huge Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.

Now it seems they're revamping the heroes' histories again with the Infinite Crisis event that's going on now at DC. How they'll explain Batman and Superman being young again despite having already been relaunched in 1980 remains to be seen.
