Thread: Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves

  1. Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves

The game's been out for about a month now and I was playing it a bit slowly, but finished it at last. I occasionally see people list Sly games in the haul threads but official threads or conversations about them never really creep up. So to start things, here's the best review you'll find of Sly 3 on the net: mine.

The games are generally targeted towards a younger audience, and some of the writing in them reflects that, but anyone who's been avoiding the series is doing them a disservice (especially Sly 2 and 3). It's witty, charming stuff, and though the story has been getting more serious since Sly 2, it never loses its sense of fun, which a lot of the heavier, more adult fare seem to be victim of. And the characterizations are among the strongest I've ever seen:

Nearly all the voice actors reprise their roles, slipping back into character without missing a step. Even if the reintroduction of characters may have been a business decision as I suspect, Sucker Punch still mines it, reaching depths unseen in the series. The icy armistice forged between Panda King (one of the Sly's parents' killers) and Sly (who has agreed to rescue his daughter) is especially poignant. Or such as the striking relationship between the new techie recruit, Penelope, and Bentley, the Milhouse of the group who casts aspersions at Sly's facility to attract the fairer sex and laments over his own regressing physicality. Astonishing sophistication, especially for a game that's pretty much some furry's dream come true.
Just think of the best Saturday morning cartoons you've seen, and turn it into an interactive game with kick ass level design and a lot of variety.

  2. Sly 1 was awesome, one of the top PS2 games handsdown.

Just picked up Sly 2 for 10 bucks, and working through it has felt like more of a chore than anything else. If I ever finish I might try out 3, but one of the things im not liking is the multiple characters angle in Sly 2

    Sly 2 = 3 Characters
    Sly 3 = 8 Characters

  3. I liked Sly 2 more than 1. But I got rid of my PS2, so no Sly 3 for me.

  4. Huh, I think introducing more characters was one of the smarter things they did. Really opened up the series. But I really tend to focus just as much on the dialogue and story, and the way they quickly and smoothly integrated the characters was fantastic.

It's true that Sly is still the best character to play, but this isn't like Sonic Adventure (closest thing I could think of) where all the characters just did a bunch of shit that had nothing to do with anything.

  5. Bringing back an old thread cause I just finished the game and have to say it is the best of the series. The multiplayer aspect adds some longevity to the game also. And now they have a contest running where the grand prize winner gets a trip to San Francisco, Alcatraz, and a shopping spree to the Sony Store. Sounds excellent!

  6. I should really pick up Sly 2 (& 3 when it goes GH) one of these days... the first was hands-down my favorite 3D platformer.
