As near as I can tell, they're going to have a hell of a time going the same route as they did with Windows PCs. Even if Mac OS X has an equivalent to autorun like Windows does regarding programs (and I don't remember whether they do or not), most of what these programs install require administrator-level privileges. These discs are trying to quietly install these rootkits and drivers, and unlike Windows users who run as Administrators, Mac OS X users who run as Administrators have to confirm via username/password any administrative-level change.

In this particular case, it IS Windows's somewhat poor security model to blame.

Under fire, Sony offers a fix.

  7. That fix ain't good enough to save their asses now, from what this report says, somebody could go to jail.

  8. Sony is definitely not off the hook yet.

  9. Nice, yeah sue their asses. In the meantime:

WASHINGTON - Stung by continuing criticism, the world's second-largest music label, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, promised Friday to temporarily suspend making music CDs with antipiracy technology that can leave computers vulnerable to hackers. <snip>
