Thread: Need RPG Recommendations

  1. Thanks to the many suggestions here, I have added the following RPG's to my library:

    Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Tensei: Nocturne (got it used for $40 at my local ebgames)
    Final Fantasy Anthology (GH version)
    Final Fantasy IX
    Suikoden III
    Phantasy Star COllection (GBA)

    I already own Xenogears, Xenosaga 1 & 2, Lunar 1 & 2, the rest of the Final Fantasy games, Chrono Cross & Chrono Trigger, Dragon Warrior 1, 2, 3, & 7, Suikoden I, and Wild Arms 1,2 & 3.

My preorders have been placed on Magna Carta and Dragon Quest VIII.

I am watching auctions for Digital Devil Saga, Suikoden 2 and the Persona games.

I have more than enough to keep me busy this winter (and in Syracuse, NY they can be long!!). I have started Wild Arms 3 and I am enjoying that game. I like the combat system and I like the graphic style.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!!!

  2. I'm rather late, but you should really check out Tales of Eternia. Great sprite animation, beautiful visuals overall, the battle system is fast and fun and the music is by Motoi Sakuraba. It's a PS1 rarity, so it goes for quite the penny on eBay, but I found one for 30 Canadian, so there's hope for everyone.

  3. How's this for a pleasant Sunday surprise...

I went to Toys R Us to get Digital Devil Saga 2 this morning. I was planning on returning an XBox game I got during the "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" sale so it would cost me about $39 for DDS2 ($33.33 for the original plus the $5 difference). The image on the wall at Toys R Us shows the box for the second game. I grab the ticket and exchange it. When I get over to pick up my game it ends up being the first DDS Deluxe Edition. Not a bad score for $39 still sealed.

  4. The Fry's near where I live still has like twenty DDS Deluxe Editions. If I had extra cash I'd snap those up and sell 'em in a year or two. Buying Atlus games is like putting money in the bank.

Cybr, I have very similar tastes in RPGs, and I need to recommend you check out Skies of Arcadia Legends- it'll be everything you're looking for. Another game that I don't think has been represented here is Shining the Holy Ark, you'll either love or hate it. And of course, try Golden Sun on GBA.

I just started playing Neverwinter Nights on PC, and absolutely love it! Would I dig Bioware's other D&D games (BG, Icewind Dale, etc.)? What other WRPGs should I try?

Seconded. Although I disagree about the graphics (the battle engine runs at a choppy framerate compared to the silky-smooth Tales of Destiny), the fighting is a ton of fun, the music is quite good, and there's lots to do for side-quests and whatnot. The story and characters aren't all that great, but the battle system makes up for it.

I sold Tales of Destiny some time ago, but this one is a keeper.
