Thread: EGM Greatest 200 games of all time

  1. That still doesn't explain why Tron Arcade is there.

  2. I'm tired of these lists. How excatly is a list like this even possible? If two games both had a huge impact at the time of their release (Let's say, Super Mario Bros and Tetris), was one's release more important then the other? Super Mario Bros proved that games could be more than twitch or single screen outtings, while Tetris paved the way for a new audience to embrace something that had been unpleasent entertainment for years before it's release. They were both important, but I hardly think one is more critical than the other.

Again, stupid, stupid list. Pyschonauts, for example, does not deserve to be on this list. I loved it, mind you, but it really didn't do anything that was unheard of or completely new. It was just really well made, had a sense of humor and a neat graphical style.

Argh, again, boo to these stupid lists.

The purpose of such a list is to stir up controversy so that people (like us) can argue all day long about why EGM would put such and such a game while leaving out this and that. We are talking about a list they made, and it is kinda like free advertising to them. Mission accomplished for them.

I agree with you about Psychonauts. The thing is, I can't even limit myself to top 100 games, there are way too many games I love hehe. Hell, just for 8 bit generation, I have more than 100 games that are tops.

  4. I say we delete this thread and never speak of it again.
"Chuy, you're going to have a magical life. Because no matter where you go, it's always going to be better than Tucson."

  5. I say we stop acting surprised and outraged every time a list comes out and contains arguable entries. Unless Madden 2003 and Heroes of the Lance get spots 1 and 2, there's nothing particularly outrageous. The lists will never be 100% accurate or definitive and nobody will ever agree with everything on them.

if they meant discs of tron, they'd be correct.

maybe that's what they were talking about.
look here, upon a sig graveyard.

  7. The first Tron game had light cycles.

That earns it a spot in the top 100 for me goddammit.

It had 4-player LAN play and 2-player phone-line play. It was extremely influential in making sure id spent as much time as they did getting Net play right with Quake. Doom is still the most played online game ever between me and a few older friends. It really should be on the list somewhere.

Just some random comments on oddities that stuck out:

    198. Utopia - Should be much higher. Civilization-style gameplay nearly a decade early.
    179. magician lord - Um. No.
    176. flashback - Out Of This World > Flashback.
    166. POP: sands of time - Deserves to be on the list, but no mention of the original POP?
150 kirby's adventure - Okay game, but honestly... I can name a dozen better NES platformers that aren't on the list. Ninja Gaiden 2, for a random example.
    118. pro wrestling - A WINNER IS YOU! But this game is not a winner. I'm surprised Urban Champion isn't on the list, with crap like this showing up.
    104. wipeout ps1 - Should be replaced with the superior sequel.
    43. tron arcade - I like it, but this shouldn't be this high.
    33. tecmo bowl - Tecmo SUPER Bowl is the legendary sports title. Tecmo bowl is not.
    32. robotron 2084 - Needs a top 10 slot.
    21. phantasy star online - Decently fun game, but shouldn't be anywhere up this high.
    17. halo - Because getting lost due to multiple iterations of the exact same level is so much fun!
11.metroid - Again, why is this up here when the sequel was much better? Perhaps a better way of ordering the list would have been to put sequels that don't drastically alter the gameplay into the same entry. That way, the 2d metroids would have their own spot. Ditto with the 3 very similar 3d zeldas, and so on.
    01. SUPER MARIO BROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - I can live with that. There are several games that can be called the best game ever. I'd personally go for Space War, but this (or Tetris or Adventure) is fine.
