I haven't thought about codecs since I got the old k-lite pack way back when. Is this what people are using still? I want to play an mkv file

Get VLC Media Player, that is all you will ever need. And if you want just the codec pack, go here.

Zoomplayer Pro.

Plays everything I throw at it. VLC wouldn't play jack shit, and half the shit it played it took up so many system resources to do so it didn't play them at full speed.

I had a few spare left over parts that I made my current HTPC out of, (a semperon 3100 at the heart of it) and most HD files VLC could not play at full speed, Zoomplayer on the other hand plays them flawlessly.

I've never had a single problem with VLC playing any type of media, nor has it ever taken up more then 3% of resources at most no matter what system I am running it on.

I will try out this said Zoomplayer for comparisons sake though.
