Shoot, just use VLC and forget all that mess. Macs are supposed to be easy to use!
Why let Windows users have all the fun?
Apple's QuickTime Player is the standard for Mac OSX, and while it isn't bad, out of the box, it's kinda useless. So, here's a list of codecs out there that are a must-have for all Mac OSX users.
For the Divx/Xvid stuff, I really recommend having them all installed, because each codec below is stronger at one piece of the puzzle than the others.

QuickTime (.mov)
MPEG 1 (.mpg)
MPEG4 (.mp4)
H.264 (.mp4)
Shockwave Flash (.swf)
DivX 6.0

Mplayer OSX (not v2) is better than VLC, first of all.Originally Posted by Dunlap
Second, VLC doesn't help me preview movies in the Finder, watch things via Front Row, watching things embedded in a website, etc.
And how is it a mess? Download the codecs, install them once, and QuickTime is better off for it.

My computer runs VLC better than Mplayer so I only said that for simplicity, though I do prefer to use Mplayer if I'm watching a subtitled video. As for your other points, I've never experienced those. I don't preview, don't have a media center, and the only times I meet embedded stuff it's all windows media which opens a "would you like to try playing this in xxx?" dialog. Only thing I use QuickTime for now is H.264 playback... I guess I'd download a codec so I could do a quick edit with QuickTime...
You never do any previewing in the Finder? Wow. What view do you usually use, Icon?

Yep. I only preview pictures.
MS is dumping WMP for Mac and has made Flip4Mac's WMV decoding plugin for Quicktime free to download.

I don't know if there is a catch to it... Have you guys installed this update?

I installed the update because the previous version would crash safari/QT after playing a .wmv.
I still can't watch .wmv in firefox though.
