Thread: News: College Kids are Stupid

Just because you DON'T do certain things every day doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to if you are confronted with it. As for the third one (tips), you just take 10% than half of that again. Not knowing how to do that is just plain sad.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily speak to intelligence, but I would expect intelligent people to be able to do that with ease.
Yes, very true. That is a good point. Thinking about this article again, I think you should be able to figure some of these things out in seconds. I'm just not sure about the blood pressure chart. If I had a chart, and it told me what the blood pressure should be, and it labeled the abbreviations then I assume that I would be able to read the chart and figure it out myself. However, if I did not know what number on my blood pressure should be higher or lower I would be lost.

However, I do wonder about the part where the article states, "the students could not estimate if their car had enough gas to get to the service station". Is this saying that the students do not have the skills to figure out an equation that will tell them how many miles their car can get to a gallon? Or is this statement indicating that students can not read a meter on their car that says it has a half or quarter of a tank of gas. If its saying that they can not read a gas meter, then YES, college students may be border line mentally challenged.

On a side note, the third thing about the tips is kind of funny. My reading comprehension skills must have gone down the drain or something. I read the article again and did not see any thing about tips. So, maybe I made that one up or my eyes get tired after reading on the internet. However, I do know for a fact that my brother would never be able to calculate ten percent of any number

  2. Im and English major and I think Melf is a profesor of English in PR.

People in college are just like people everywhere else. Some are exceptional, and some are exceptionally dumb. There is no easy way to make generalizations about somebody who is in college or who has a degree, because like people have said, it is what you make out of the situation. College can be an amazing experience both academically and not, but its up to the individual.
    your mom

  3. I agree. Most people in college are pretty damn dumb, including yours truly.

By "take 10%" he means move the decimal point (peroid) over to the LEFT once.

Just thought I'd clear that up for the college grads.

In elementary school my parents used to tell me how much the total was when we went out to dinner, then I'd figure out the tip. It was awesome. But I actually like learning and shit.

Which explains why I did so well in school and graduated college.

That last sentence contains two lies.

I'm not quite sure how you're proving them wrong.

  7. The average college student at a public university is dumb as shit. I kept a list of fucked up sentences from papers students have turned in to me, but I lost it not too long ago. Here is all that remains:

"Poverty can be very fortunate than being rich with gold."

"This lesson has, through common sense, been identified though a form pure experience."

"Poverty was dwelled upon as not acceptable but honest."

"[...] Beowulf is fully and primarily a Christian poem because most of the passages within the poem support the suggestions of there being references made in the poem that can be found in the Old and New Testaments [...]"

All this shit was actually turned into me. And these aren't in-class essays or anything. They had weeks to work on these things. The saddest thing is that some of these papers made A's and B's.

More people are going to college than ever, and standards are dropping fast, even at the really selective private colleges.

EDIT: I didn't edit this. Scourge is faking quotes.

  8. Academia employees posting on TNL are the people you least suspect.

  9. "It is kind of disturbing that a lot of folks are graduating with a degree and they're not going to be able to do those things," said Stephane Baldi, the study's director at the American Institutes for Research, a behavioral and social science research organization.
Oh, it's "kind of" disturbing? That these "folks" can't do "those things"?

It looks like someone doesn't have a college education.

  10. Someone explain this article to me.
