Thread: The Classic Portable Gaming Tribute Thread

  1. Some of my favorites have been the Game & Watch Gallery series spanning GB,GBC, and GBA. The games are perfect for portables and IMO this is how you do a classic compilation, offer both the original and an updated version. My favorite of the series would probably be #2 for GBC.

  2. Montezuma's Return for the GBC is a VERY faithful sequel to the old school Motezuma's Revenge. I think that MR is THE game the hooked me on gaming for life so getting a very good sequel many years later was a very nice little gift. Sorry, I couldn't find a pic.

  3. Another wonderful Neozeedeater classic console thread. My top GB picks are:

    Metroid II

    SML 1 and 2

    Operation C

    R-TYPE

    Kirby's Adventure

    Battletoads

Good call. I think Game & Watch games were the first portable games I played(or maybe some Mattel sports games). They're perfect for quick fixes and the compilations are great especially since actual G&W games are often quite expensive to collect.

It's a completely different game. Game Gear Batman Returns is very similar to the Master System game except with enhancements like the special attack. It's better than the Lynx game.

Speaking of SMS games on Game Gear, I'm glad Sega focused mostly on new content instead of quick conversions but some of SMS games on the system are really good. Besides the Sonic and Mickey games already mentioned, Japan finally got to have Wonder Boy III, North America got to play Vampire: Master of Darkness and there was Bubble Bobble which has more content than the arcade game.

I just happened to have a pic of it on my hard drive because I was going to put it in a quiz before but never did. I'm a huge fan of the original game.

  5. Bubble Bobble which has more content than the arcade game.
Enlighten me. I play the SMS rev a lot on my PSP.

If your favorite old school portable game didn't let you listen to Black Sabbath's Iron Man while you fought a boss battle, then it wasn't good as mine:

It has double the amount of levels as the arcade plus two new bosses and password save. Plus you need to find hidden items to beat the game. Here is a list of cheats if you're interested - http://raccoonlad.topcities.com/bb-faq.html

I didn't know about this stuff until just last year and was surprised to find out that SMS/GG Bubble Bobble(AKA Final Bubble Bobble on the Mark III) is better than the arcade game with only a very slight downgrade in graphics and sound.

Ninja Gaiden was a great port and that reminds me of my top portable beat 'em up of that time: Game Boy Double Dragon. It played better than any other home port. I like it more than the GBA remake too.

Ahh, that's what I'm talking about. It's good to hear that you are a fan of the original. I knew you had good taste.

Did you happen to play the GBC sequel? I'm interested in hearing your opinion of it.
