Thread: Gorf Classic hits the JagCD

  1. Gorf Classic hits the JagCD

Some of you guys saw this at VGXPO and now it's finally available: Gorf Classic for the Jag CD.

I was involved on this project with testing, packaging design and other misc. contributions. Gorf Plus and Gorf 3D are still in development as standalone games - they didn't want to have to cut anything out of any of the gameplay modes just to fit it on a single cart. So Classic went to CD and the other 2 are planned to be cartridge releases.

    39 dollars? LOL.

I will admit that's a really nice job on the packaging. Just not 39 dollars worth for some silly emulated mess of a game. I'm sure there wasn't some huge rush to get this project out the door. People would've waited but for some reason they found it a necessity to unleash 400 kb of joy exclusively for Jag CD owners. Truly they are heroes of gaming.

Seriously, fuck these assholes. Jag owners have my condolences.

    Wow.

First off, it's not emulated - it's a complete port to the Jag hardware. There is more to it than you're assuming (hidden extras - it's not just a straight arcade port). This mode alone takes up 2MB which is half of a 4MB cart, mostly from the sampled arcade sound effects. 2MB for two other complete games is nothing and this Classic mode is much more accurate and complete than Classic modes in other "2000" series games on the Jag.

There was no rush to get this out the door. Planning on the Gorf trilogy began back in 98. These guys are not making a fortune on this - it is a hobbyist effort released at minimal profit. We are not talking mass quantites of production here, it's much more expensive per item to produce for such a niche market. $35 is a downright steal compared to other recent Jag releases.

Dude, that's a completely reasonable price. You pay a premium, sure, but for the dedicated, it can be worth it. I've bought posthumous Lynx and Vectrex releases, and got my money's worth. But you never see these games for less than that price. It's just how it goes.

I played this one and it's a neat release. It's more than just a port of Gorf, but it is a whole new game in the classic vain.

But we're talking about Gorf, a game that was released in 1981, being put out as a new game for the Jaguar, which died in 1996.

It's not, though, it's a new game. I played it.

EDIT: Or maybe I'm thinking of Gorf Plus, actually...

  10. Gorf was/is such a clunky game. Moves like molasses.

    That artwork is awesome though.
