Of course, pretty much anything you register for tells you that they will never ask for your password, so if you get an e-mail asking for your password you should know it's not right (that's about the only thing I could tell was false from my Paypal e-mail).
I never trust any email that says "Bank Account Issue", "Update your account information", etc. even if the From field does claim that it's from PayPal or other such sites. If something does come up, I'll go to the real site to check my account status. Never do I click email links.
One HTML-coded false PayPal email even had the gall to ask for my ATM PIN.
