The Gimp (at least the one I used a few months back) had me doing some retarded x11 bullshit before loading up properly. I'm not sure if they fixed that yet. I'll check it out again.

Yeah, you need X11 installed to run the gimp.
It's not a big deal, and it's not that different from having to install GTK on Windows to run Open Office or GAIM.
The X11 installer can be found on the OSX install disc and I've never had any problems with it.
