TNL Movie: Old Boy

There are bad asian films and then there are worse asian films. Then, somewhere in that murky abyss, there are those rare few that are legitimately worth watching. This, in my opinion, is one of those films:



Now, foreign films with odd premiseses are old hat, but few of them are able to actually take their concept to an interesting and satisfying end. While there is a lot of this movie that requires your suspension of disbelief, the story it tells is worth the effort. At its heart it's a tragedy not unlike the ones from ancient Greece. It's full of twists and turns and many times you may feel like you've lost a sense of what's going on, but by the film's conclusion you will be acutely aware of how everything fits. It's an amazing journey that I thought atleast some of you might enjoy.

Okay so here's the basic plot guy gets kidnapped and imprisoned in something like a hotel room for 15 years without explanation and with only a TV for company. He then is inexplicably released, equipped with money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. He then gets a call telling him he has 5 days to figure out why he was kidnapped and he'll be killed. As I said, the story from there goes in every direction, but reaches a solid conclusion.

I've checked online and both Netflix and Blockbuster claim to have it. I know for a fact that Amazon does. Anyway, give it a try and tell me what you think.

I watched thiis shortly after it came out on dvd here and I was blown away. Great idea, some awesome twists, some really great acting and some seriously strong direction. A fucked up. great flick that everyone should check out.

I own this movie and have watched it many a times. A wonderful film, with some pure evil plot twists. A great example of the high calibur of films that are coming out of Korea right now.

I only hope that the rumors I've heard that hollywood wants to do an American remake of this film are untrue, cause I know it'll end up being fucking horrible.

Oh yeah, Old Boy was some good stuff. Great revenge movie with some cruelly awesome scenes.

I saw this movie december 2004. I must say, it truly shocked me. Great film.
